Private Boat Leasing/Rental

Hey guys, thinking about a concept to connect skippers without boats with owners willing to lease their rig. Assuming insurances can be covered off, what are your thoughts regarding peer-to-peer leasing (Air B&B style) of your boat for a few extra $$$ to cover your fuel bill, boat rego, maintenance, etc? How many (good) days a year could your boat be made available to do this? What sort of $$$ would you want for leasing your boat? What reservations would you have?

How about those of you who have a skippers ticket but no boat - how likely would you be to rent a boat on a peer-to-peer basis? What sort of $$$ would you be prepared to fork out for a good day on the water in the boat of your choice?

Speaking for myself, I have an old 19' Guardian on trailer with a smokey 175 Johnson on the back - not pretty but great for a day's fishing off Two Rocks, out back of Garden Island, Rotto, or squidding off South Beach. I'd be happy to get $150 a day if someone wanted it.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Great idea though risky from personal experience.

I borrowed a mates 30ft timber stink boat boat to go to rotto a few years back. Rocked up on the day and it wouldn't start. After messing around with batteries and connectors for hours we unpacked it and took the ferry.

Next weekend he took it over to the rock, it popped a plank and went down within three minutes.

Insurance would need to be good...

I think you may find there

I think you may find there is a survey class for rental boats.

I wouldnt rent or lend my boat to an unknown ever, Id rather swap to a smaller boat if it was a money issue.

One bump or scrape you dont notice til later-mucho dinero!

On the other hand Id rent someone elses maybe

Robs right, as soon as money

Robs right, as soon as money is changing hands it's a whole different kettle of fish.. Survey, insurances etc..

easier if you own a polycraft ;-)

 Service category will be "4"

Thu, 2015-08-20 08:08

Service category will be "4" hire and drive vessel.

you will need the boats to be built to NSCV code as per AMSA regulation.

there is a grandfather systems but only applies to vessels already in survey(USL code)prior to the new NSCV code coming in.

Think you will find that your idea is not doable but get on to AMSA and see what they say.

the are some people doing boat shares where you own a percentage of a recreational vessel, this is totally different to leasing a vessel.

let us know what you find.

Cheers

Chris

I've had my current boat for

Thu, 2015-08-20 08:12

I've had my current boat for 10 years now.
sorry but no way (within reason....lol)I would lease this out to an unknown.

If I needed the money that badly I would try to find another way.
Perhaps the only option I would look at, if money was tight is boat share with someone I know. that way the other party(ies) have a vested interest in looking after the boat.

I "generally" wouldn't buy an ex rental car so owning a rental boat would be the same for me.

not trying to put a damper on your idea just giving you my thoughts.

I would expect that most boat owners save like hell and when they actually get the boat they want....they have some sort of personal affinity with it. "it's their baby"...sounds strange but believe it to be true more so than say car etc.

I guess really that I know my boat, know how it's been treated, know what revs to run it at in diff conditions. etc. It has my life (and family's) riding in it when I'm past sight of land so me personally.....I want to know exactly what it's been through. Don't want to be out there thinking "3 ppl have been in this since I've last taken it out ....did they just WOT it everywhere? did they get some braid wrapped around the prop?" etc etc.

my thoughts anyway

If it is doable And if I

If it is doable And if I decided to do it I would want a day fee and an engine hour rate.

For example $300 for the day and $9 per engine hour.  This allows for the servicing component for engine only.

i think it would be tough on

Thu, 2015-08-20 12:31

i think it would be tough on many fronts - a few years back we lent our boat to a friend who knows his way around a boat (masterclass 4 skipper) coming back down the river the boat sucked up a plastic bag and blocked the heat exchanger - overheat alarm (buzzer) did not sound and overheated engine - luckily not too much damage and we claimed on insurance - he was fast to come forward and offer to pay but in a peer to peer system it would be hard to manage as he had not actually done anything wrong....
on a different note - i would not let anyone take my boat out that i didnt know well -

Not for me

Thu, 2015-08-20 17:18

I can't speak for everyone, but definately not something I would consider. With around 70 grand invested in my pride and joy, it just would not be worth the risk for a few hundred dollars a day. And besides, imagine sitting at home when conditions are good so that someone else can be out in YOUR boat !

Great Idea

Thu, 2015-08-20 20:22

I'm in Karratha August 29th to sept 25th on a 6-1 roster, any one willing to lend the tinny or vessle when the day suits would be great?? drop off and pick up required also!, or would love a day out weather up the creeks for a few muddies or a deep trip, fuel and beverage bill covered!!!

Owned 2 boats over a 6 year period, take care of my gear! and will do the same with yours.

This due to no rec boat hire in karratha anymore as far as im aware.

As for lending my old girl!! happy to do so to the right person once some trust was built, would take a few shared trips before handover  could be sorted.

looked into it

Thu, 2015-08-27 13:25

I investigated this before I bought my Ski.

there are companies that do it already. do a quick search on the web. Starts at 300 a day, and you can have a skipper at 400 a day. you supply fuel, bait, food etc. this will exclude insurance. Didn't do it as you dont know how reliable the motor is.

I would be hard pressed to

Thu, 2015-08-27 14:23

I would be hard pressed to lend my boat to a mate let alone someone I didn't know - so many things can go wrong.

NO WAY

Thu, 2015-08-27 14:42

Even though I have a dinged Traily 5.4 she is our puppy. I decided on a tinny as it is only ever a fishing/crabbing boat and you are going to get bangs from sinkers etc. I try to take care but sometimes it still happens. I can only blame myself and the boss if this happens so no tears spilt.

But if someone took mine out and dinged it more I would be ropable.

Price wise

Thu, 2015-08-27 15:32

I would pay maybe $200 plus $20 an hour per engine hour at a guess.

I understand reservations on both parties, but financially that is roughly a price I would pay.
