prop size for Suzuki DF150
Submitted by jutt on Mon, 2012-10-08 15:56
Im looking for some advice from anyone that has a Suzi 150, i have a s/s prop, 3x16x21.5, i have been told by my marine guru that the motor is overproped, this evident by the leg oil?? I have the motor on a 5.8 Coraline Oceanrunner and get around 36kn @ 5500 rpm, the motor peaks at 6000rpm WOT but i can never get to that rpm. Any ideas on a prop size? I hear good things about 4x blade props, keen to hear back from the Fishwrecked comunity, cheers.

Im running
a 3 x 14/ 19 but on a df140 pushing a 575 cruise craft outsider. (if theres a big difference in gearboxes between these models my info will probly be completly invalid)
I have been testing between two props the 14/19 and the 14/21. I first tested it with the boat boat unloaded in calm seas and found the 21 had faster top end and both props topped at 6200rpm. I felt the 21 was a better prop in that test.
next was a loaded, on a trip out for the day. The 19 seemed to maintain speed in average seas much better than the 21 but i dropped 2 to 3 knots. Not a big issue as i generally cruise at around 24 knots anyways. Im not sure of the fuel consumption yet as im yet to fill it up. Will let you know when i do.
Anyways hope that is some help

Do a google search on your boat vs motor and you may find the answer. However, it does seem the prop you have is too big as you are not achieving 6000rpm. The 3 = # of blades
16= the diameter of your prop in inches
21.5= the pitch which is the distance the prop travels for one rotation.
Basics- smaller pitch/diameter = larger revs and visa versa.
Unfortunatly the only way to size a prop is trial and error.

Got a DF150 on the back of a 20ft Chivers (F/glass), running a 3x15.75x21p.
it's a Solas Rubex L3 Plus

I didn't go the full 16" (I went 15.75"), but the difference in "bite" I found comin from a 14" dia prop on the old DF115 was awesome.
Mid range cruising so much more economical too.
i did a lot of research prior to buying and think I got it pretty much right.
I could possibly drop to a 20" pitch, as it won't pull 6k WOT with a full load, but still gets 5800-5900 which is still spot on in the recommended WOT range
Then again, it'd be awesome to try out 10 different props including some fancy options.
