Protecting boat from craypots

Hi all,
What does everyone use to protect the nice shiny fibreglass from hand pulling craypots up and over the side?? Have seen a few people use a piece of carpet hanging over the side?

I've only started crayfishing this year from an ali boat, I've been using a large piece of PVC pipe on one gunnel to pull the rope over, slide the pots over etc.

I've seen other blokes using carpet.

hey John, have you been pulling pots off ocean reef throughout the week, saw a largish plate boat with the same PVC set-up and thought that's a bloody good idea. I would imagine the rope would run smoothly over it.

We have been using a few old towels but its not a very good solution. I also saw a few boats with big rubber mats hanging over the side which would provide some good protection to the gunnels and side of the hull, especially for steel based pots.

Yeah

Yeah that's probably my brother, dad and I. Rope is easy to pull over the PVC and it also protects the gunnels, got the idea from Carnarvonite on here.

Rubber matting

Thu, 2014-11-20 13:13

I have had a fibreglass boat and the last thig I wanted was Pot dings all up the side. Using heavy carpet that stinks up after a while and never drys is not the answer.

I went to clark rubber its not cheap but worth it, I purchased a good length of black thick rubber off a rool they stock and it was the jet.

Make sure you get it long enough to touch the deck of your boat over the gunnel and touch the water. never had any damage, hose off back in the ramp does not stink and drys straight away. Roll up and ready for action next time.

I have been using a large off cut of artificial turf laid grass side down on the deck and up over the side and down nearly to the water line. Good grip under foot but not perfect as it does move a bit. Easy to wash though and no gouges out of my gel coat yet.

Poly pipe

Thu, 2014-11-20 17:06

Poly pipe is the way to go and you can hang a mat of carpet underneath it to protect the side of the boat as well. There is lots less friction on the rope as it slides rather than grips as you pull the pot in. Anything to make life easier, you only have to look at what all the oldies do when they go out pulling their pots, they have tried and tested before settling down on the best solution.

Poly Pipe

Funny, I too have just seen the poly pipe on the gunnel, probably at Point Peron, and I thought 'what a great idea'!

poly pipe is the go , cut it

poly pipe is the go , cut it lengthwise and use a rubber mallet to push it over the gunnel

we also run a 200mm wide board across the boat gunnel to gunnel .just drilled and drop 1 s/steel cup head bolt each side to stop it moving about ,

then when the pot comes inboard it slides right up and onto the board, , you can work on the bait, crays and repairs at waist height without all the bending , makes reseting the pot easy to as it just slides straight off into the drink

This is how I did mine, the gunwhale was way to wide for pipe and this works so well I leave it there all the time.

Made from 6mm HPDE
