Purchasing a Baitcaster!
Submitted by Elora Danan on Thu, 2008-06-12 19:15
Hey guys,
I'm planning to buy a new baitcaster to tee up with my Shimano Starlo Stix Tournament Pro 6-8kg (old baitcaster karked it). The old reel got me covered with how to cast and all the little knick nacks that comes with using a baitcaster.
Willing to spend $100 - 300. (Apprentice wage, stin-gy bastard).
Any recommendations and reports about reels are very welcome. All will be taken on board.
Cheers lads,
Darda

Gday there Daisy and Banjo!
Evening there too Daisy, umm I'm willing to chuck lures and baits or what not to get me a fish so I just say a little all-round type. Don't mind about the look, I think its all about the profile and compfort wise.
Banjo mate I never tried the Calcutta's before, willing to go and have a look at them. Heard they are good heavy duty reels though?
I like using them for baitfishing as well, it will allow my fish to swallow the offering before having to strike.
Cheers lads,

Based in Canning Vale.
So might have to check the couple stores in and around Canning Vale or what not. Can't just leave more my poor fellow alone with no partner. I think maybe the Calcutta might have got me on this one.

Calcuttas go hard especially
Calcuttas go hard especially the TE range, got one myself the 400te. but their a bit pricey but the abu 6500's are decent reels for their price ay bout $150. theyll hande most things from salmon and tailor easy.

Comes down to preference
Comes down to preference mate, if your throwing lightweight baits and lures the Shimano Calcutta 200b ($240)and the low profile Curado 300DSV ($299) are great also for less money but still good quality are the ABU 4600C4 and 5600C4 (both $180 to $200), these both come with Carbon drag washers now and are ten times easier to service yourself, I've had a good run out of mine with a little care and maint. Heavier ones would be the Calcutta 400b ($299) and the Abu 6600C4 ($180-$200) not so comfy to be casting all day long but more versatile if that bigger fish comes along. These prices are local you may do better on Ebay, internet etc
Whatever you choose I hope you clean up with it Cobber.
Cheers, Daisy

May go along with Shimano Calcutta 200b. For that price, it seems one of those high top quality reels which will last many years to come. Never hurt to have a Gold Reel doesn't it, may feel a little gangster now, LOL

Thanks guys!
For the time and detail you put into this, always helpful and makes things quick and easy to get. This will also change the way I approach fishing for Tailor and other Pelagics from the stones.
Also it will be used as a "Sit and Wait" combo, for the Pink Snapper or more probably a Stingray but ahh well.

Yeah, the calcutta B series
Yeah, the calcutta B series reels are pretty nice mate I'm sure you'll be more than happy with performance and bling factor, Banjo the Curado is a low profile Mag type reel, absolutely beautiful to cast but a bit awkward when fighting big fish. The reel you're thinking of is the Shimano Corvalus which may be another option for Darda coming in at around $140.
Cheers, Daisy

they are all good even the bottom of the range ones.
for 6-8kg go for a 200 size
say a 200b or something can pick one up less than 200 f your lucky but 220 is pretty normal

Tah Brad!
Will have to purchase this little reel then hey. All the boys up north must be firing away cast after cast with these Calcutta's in some tough conditions. $220 is really good I think. Perfect I say.. Just add some line, what you reckon will work good alongside the reel?

I just picked up a 400B
I just picked up a 400B about 2 weeks ago. Only one fish so far (well, the tiny scorpion cod didnt count), but seems to be going pretty well. They generally have a good reputation. Also, held a fair about of line being a traditional shape, not a low profile, which is good for bottom fishing where you could get something big. Depends on your application and preferences whether you want low profile/line capacity or not.

I have a curado 300dsv and
I have a curado 300dsv and now I think it's lovely to cast. I have fished it with 10 and 20lb in it, and I had the drag washers upgraded, so I can do a little more hurt with it.
The calcutta 400 takes a fair bit more line (160y v's 120y @ 20lb), but the curado seems to take plenty of 20lb for inshore work. It has a slightly faster retrieve, and out of the bok, just 2.5lb less drag.
