Question for Auto Sparkies
I need some direction in wiring up a 12 pin flat trailer plug. I have just had a new tow bar and tekonsha P3 fitted to my vehicle. When Parkside fitted they recommended a 12 pin flat connector so that I could get power to recharge the backup battery for the Hydrastar brake system. So I have picked up a 12 pin male connector for the trailer end and removed the 7 pin round connector.
I am now presented with a trailer cable that has five wires in it and a separate heavier blue wire and an even heavier black wire. When I google the wiring diagram I get for the 7 smaller pins:
- Brown = tail lights on pin 7
- Green = right indicator on pin 4
- White = earth on pin 3
- Red = stop on pin 6
- Yellow = left indicator on pin 1
So that accounts for the wires in the trailer cable, I assume I don't need pin 2 (black) or pin 5 (blue) to be wired to the SMALLER pins. So which of the larger pins do I wire the blue and the black to ? From what I can see on the car end, pins 9 and 10 have been used but not sure which is for what?
Any help will be appreciated.

One way is use a test light.
One way is use a test light. You can get them from supercheap for....supercheap. Put one end of the test light (it will have a alligator clip on one end) to earth, turn your light on one at a time ie brake them check which pin lights up with the pointy end of the test light, then do right indicator and so on....
The trick bit will be to find the earh or negative as it is called in the plug. To do this once you know which pin is which put the alligator clip end of the test light on that pin and go through the pins until the test light works. That should be the earth.
Hope this helps

I'm NOT an auto electrician,
I'm NOT an auto electrician, however.....
Pins 3 (small) and 10 (large) are ground.
It looks like you have the brake/indicators/lights sorted. They will be on the smaller pins, colours as you have described.
Assumptions on my part:
They have wired a ground and positive onto pins 10 and 9 respectively, on the car's plug- as an extra high current power source (trailer winch, charger etc.)
The thick black wire would probably be the ground for the charger, and the thick blue would be positive lead for the charger.
If you connect a multimeter to the car's plug, with the black multimeter wire on pin 10, and the red multimeter wire on pin 9, it should reflect the source/vehicle battery voltage (e.g. +12V). If you get a negative value, then pin 9 is ground and pin 10 is positive, though I doubt they would have done it that way around, as pin 10 is ground by convention.
