Im thinking of heading out to the bunbury cut today and was wondering what rigs i should set up for that kind of area what bait i should take and if surf poppers or lures or soft baits would have any effect out there and is dusk a good time to go? thanks guys

chris, the cut does hold fish
assume you are fishing the harbour side?
I would use to rigs for the bottom
1. running sinker. tie a swivel onto your line then have a 30cm leader to the hook. just use enough lead to keep bottom.
2. paternoster rig. pretty sure we showed you this but this rig has the hook above the sinker; use a small sinker and cast up current and let it move with the current. this allows the bait to look "lifelike and natural". then just cast it out again. otherwise cast out and slowly retrieve, just enough to make the bait look alive. i like to move my paternoster rig, plus you cover more ground
you can try throwing a metal lure (halco twisty 20-30g) for some salmon trout for example. soft plastics will work and just use the amount of weight so it bounces along the bottom.
dawn and dust are best times.

what ever you do dont fish
what ever you do dont fish on the bottom all u get is stingrays and crabs
we caught quite a lot of tailor by having a float then bout 60cm of line then a gang witha mulie on it. You then let it drift up and bak where ever it want to go

The wind should be down so try some unweighted
mulies on gangs. That can sometimes make a difference if the fish are finniky.

Fishing with a girl sounds good
And I am sure you will be excited enough to get uo early to go boat fishing. Go for it - and good luck.

Cut
If you are fishing on the outside end of the groyne the area to fish is from straight out front to back on the inside of the end about 20 metres.Depending on the out going or ingoing tide let the current carry an unweighted mulie about 3-8metres off the rocks .The best time is from sundown till 9pm.
Have caught many good mulloway there using the same method. Most people cast as far as they can while the fish are right under your feet
