Quobba Gear List
Submitted by tomtom on Wed, 2015-05-13 18:33
Heading up to Quobba for the first time in a couple of weeks. Never fished anything quite as extreme or remote before and would hate to get up there and realise I've forgotten heaps of stuff. Wondering if anyone had a list from previous trips I could take a look at? Tried searching but couldnt come up with anything.
Understand it's a dangerous place and will be taking a harness and rope. Have a cliff gaff, plus a rod and reel for spinning, ballooning and bottoming. All the usual tackle for Metro fishing but I have never ballooned before so that will need a slightly new array of tackle which I don't have yet.
Any help much appreciated!!

Sinkers
When you think you have too many sinkers think again because they will disappear in no time if you are doing any bottom fishing. Same goes for hooks.
Don't think about fancy rigs for bottom fish because they don't last long enough to matter.

Hooks
Circle hooks will not snag as much as normal ones. Fishing from the rocks, I would use ball sinkers on the bottom & a changeable loop (paternostra) with 2 x snelled 4/0 - 5/0 circle hooks. Good tough wearing 80 - 100lb leader & hang on lol.
If you can get hold of some harnesses to keep you safe then all the better. A harness eliminates the use of a life jacket. (but good to have just incase)
I can't see the point of falling into the water & floating around waiting to be rescued.......
That's my tips.
cheers & stay safe

Blue Shed
On your way through Carnarvon drop in to the "Blue Shed", the tackle store down by the boat harbour, they can supply inflatable life vests for use while you are there. I am not sure if a deposit is needed or how much but will try to find out
Pretty sure you are not allowed to camp willy nilly on Quobba station, Red Bluff has a ranger and there are chalets at the main homestead. The Blowholes camp site also has a ranger and I think its $5 a night but you have to supply everything, water included

Gopro (or other action camera) - nothing like being able to relive the trip when your supposed to be working or experiencing crap weather :-)
You'd also be surprised what you didn't see/notice at the time when watching back footage

Wish I had to coin to get one for this trip! Must be able to get some amazing footage.
I gave a gopro to a mate before I came over to Oz, regretting that decision now!
