Quobba station soft plastics
Submitted by Fisho1 on Tue, 2014-06-10 17:31
Hey guys
im heading up to quobba with a few mates in a couple of months and i am wanting to have a go at some soft plastic fishing off the cliffs. I have bought my self a few 1 and 1.5oz jig heads along with some 5" and 6" paddle tails, but i'm stuck on what rod and reel combo to use. Ive read in a few places that when it comes to fishing quobba it is best to fish heavy, is that still the case with plastics? And what pound leader should be used? Wire...?
Also, what action should i give the plastic when retrieving, and how far should i let it sink?
Any info would be great guys
cheers

Will be fun!
Hey mate,
I was up at Quobba over Easter and we went pretty well on the fish - although not as good as previous years. I was the only person using soft plastics and went well - it definitely outfished the bait, I wasnt getting any crap fish too. Got some big-ens on the SP's that I wasnt able to stop either. I was off a boat though so cant really help you out on the combo. I'd be looking for a 7ish Foot 10-15kg road and loading it up with 40lb-ish line and fishing 100lb mono most of the time for insurance. By far the most successful SP for me were the Gulp 'Pearl White' 7" Jerk Shads.

Cheers,
I cant wait to get up there and explore the spots along the cliffs. If im going to try out plastics, quobba is the place to do it. Ill have a look at jerk shads next time im at the shop.
Does colour make a big differece in hook up rate? Do different colours work best for different times of the day?

Hi Fisho1, I've been a
Hi Fisho1, I've been a regular to Sharkbay for quite a few years now but only got onto SP's on my last trip in April. I took a good variety of 7" Jerk Shads but we had a quiet trip all round so I didn't have much success. One thing that did like them was the longtoms which was frustrating and had me changing back to other lures most times I gave them a crack. You definitely want a heavy jighead to get it down through water column which should result in the best chances of enticement. I used about a metre of 60lb leader with a perfection loop on the SP - worked well. As for technique maybe I'm not the best one for giving advice but the standard twitching and sinking or flat out retrieve for 5 then stop for 5 was recommended to me. Best of luck.
Burley it and they will come.

Sounds like the 7" jerk shads are the go up there, will have to stock up on a few. Ill be happy catching anything that will take interest in the plastic, having never caught anything on them before haha

Dont have to do much the
Dont have to do much the surge of the water does most of the work.
Long lifts and pauses work well for demersals...
