R51 Pathfinder or 120R Prado

Basically looking at 2-4 year cars, turbo diesel and auto. Budget for about $30k.

My question is....is the 06-08 Prado with the "D4D" motor worth $40k?? Even with around 200000km on the clock?

Ive been looking at 2 yr olds R51 pathfinder with their 2.5L TD motor. On paper they look like what Im after but havent heard much about them. Apparently they are equivalent to the D40 Navara with the same chassis, motor, gear box, etc etc, except being a wagon.

Any feedback on the Pathfinder??

Should be able to get a 07

Fri, 2011-04-29 05:06

Should be able to get a 07 Prado for around the 40 mark with aroud 50 -80 km if you look hard. Easily worth the extra. Build quality and ride and definately resale is far better than the Nissan. Only problem with the Prado is you will never get the Mrs out of it.

I have a late 08 D4d Prado and have been looking at resale, and there is no way you will find a lowK GLX D4d for anywhere near 30K. You might find a reasonable GX as they did a pretty good deal on a heap of them and put GLX rims on them and a bit of other bling but I would think they would still be around 40K as they were only released at the end of 08 and were going for about $55K from memory. I would buy the GX over the pathy but that is only on personal preference/build quality.

i would be looking at the Government auctions , they generally have lower Kms for the year for a reasonable price , but you will have to sort through the crap to find the good ones, looking at $ 40 k would almost be worth looking at a cruiser / nissan or even a dual cab nissan near new IMO

For some reason a lot of Prados sell before auction. I was looking at buying from auction for 6 months and not one I was going to bid on actually made it to auction. I ended up with an 05 with 50km for 40 from the local Port Hedland Toyota dealer of all places.

hey honsu i have an 05 pathy ,owned since new and would definatly buy another  without hesitation done 170 00 kms and hasnt mised a beat.only issue would be lack of ground clearence but from memory the prado is the same.i take it from lucky bay through to wagoe and plenty of other places i probly shouldnt and seems to go anywhere a prado will go.the other thing is the service costs on a prado will hurt ,my largest service bill to date is $570  but usually around 200 mark

Fri, 2011-04-29 08:30

You'd get a Pajero T/D for that cash, and i reckon a better car too GLX or VRX with all the fruit, their resale isn't as good ( that's why theya re cheap) but it did get the 4x4 of the year, do yourself a favour and take one for a drive, i had one for 3 years and no problems at all and mine had more fruit for less cash with more power and torque than a Prado. I'd still have it if i didn't buy the cruisecraft (100 series cruiser now)

Honsu If it helps Toyota had the GXL Turbo diesel 06s on Sale when they were new for 55k drive away. I know they did this later on also, just before the new model was realeased.

With the end of finacnial year fast approaching  dealers will be looking to clear the remainder of 2010 plated stock as well offering some good deals on existing stock.  would be worth checking it out to see what you can get, this will also help with forcing the price down on second hand cars.

If not go and buy today. Dealers will be looking to get the sales up... short month with lots of public hols.

you can get 07 patrol t/d auto for under 23k from dealers, under 130k kms.... then spend the leftover on bar work, 33s, lift, lockers...

I myself went down the road of an 07 hilux sr5.. if i could turn back time though I would have avoided the overpriced toyota.

Perhaps look over east. Dealers seem to be pretty keen to bargain as well.

I understand I need to spend another 5-6k for a Prado, especially the KDJ series with the newer motor and 5spd auto gear box.

Fri, 2011-04-29 22:43

honsu, toyotas hold their value, but they also attract a higher buying price - so it's a compromise from the start. If you're buying a few year old nissan, the previous owners would have absorbed most of the depreciation (up to 45% over 3yrs).

I'd suggest the pathfinder as they're essentially a navara - plus, you'll have extra coin in your pocket preparing for your house deposit.

heaps of power but no matter what i did to it, lift, wider tyres etc that thing just kept getting bogged in the sand, then got a 3 litre hilux with alot less power and its never been bogged in similar conditions.

have just purchased a 07 4.2 non turbo diesel landcruiser wagon (turbo model unfortunately out of my budget) so am keen to see how that goes....maybe later ill fit an aftermarket turbo to it if i think it needs it.

thats why i compare it to my hilux, that thing goes anywhere, where as i had problems with the pathfinder in places and conditions my hilux had no problems whatso ever. what i found with the pathfinder initially was low ground clearance and the spare wheel would act like a anchor under it.

after adding a lift and larger tyres it helped slightly. each to their own but in my experience i wouldnt buy another one.

id be curious to compare the wheel base length and width with the hilux / prado if theres a difference that may have something to do with it.

im happy to cop on the chin operator error occasionally but definately not the majority of the time.

i personally go th pathfinder. if you want mor ground clearance get a lift kit. the 3ltr turbo diesel should have plenty of grunt in a vehicle of that size, but imo keep away from petrol 4x4's, they can be thirsty (this is going from info i have collected from many people over the time). ok the resale wont be as good but they would be more affordable atm.

Just bought a 2008 GX Prado

Sat, 2011-04-30 18:13

Just bought a 2008 GX Prado for $38k . The car is brilliant and quite capable for your basic 4wd adventures. It could definately use a little bit of a lift but stock standard they performed really well. I think personally the prado will defiantely hold its value over the nissan any day and you just have to look at the resale value...new prados $50k....... 3 years old still $40k + for a good one. I got 950km's out of my first tank of diesel D4D engine on our camping trip down south so the fuel economy is great. We have toyotas only at work and all the mechanics reckon they arte tough with no dramas. Try going to westideauto whoelsalers in bentley they have some great deals....hope this helps

look over east mate you will get a bloody good deal if you are not in a rush. I bought a toyota prado with 130 on the clock 2000 model and paid 13,000. you just need to wait. With regards to the prado/pathfinder debate i can only go of what i know but being from the country a lot more on toyota's and pretty much all mine sites use toyota's. might just be coincidence but the people that do long driving on a consistent basis prefer a better product and toyota provide that. this is just my opinions and observations.

cheers carps

Bought myself or leased?

I was tossing up between a  BF XR8 or GT and the Prado. Came down to what had the resale when I was done with it. 10 year old Prados are still getting 20g. 10 year old XR8? Maybe 10 if I was lucky and that was for the same purchase price.

Umm, yeah, leased, but we'll own it in the end probably. Would have gone down the XR8 path, but they aren't making them at present.

Novated lease covers everything, so all I do is make sure 25000 ks are cut out each year.

Cheers

Sun, 2011-05-01 09:11

I had this issue a couple years ago.

I ended up breaking one of the criteria...went petrol, I ended up with a 2005 V8 petrol cruiser, yes it eats some fuel...BUT for the 10 to 15k difference between a second hand diesel (same everythig else) you can buy a HELL of a lot of fuel.

I got mine at under the price your looking for but snagged a bit of a deal, it was a ex lease vehicle and I knew the owner...too good a deal to say no.

Honestly IMO the toyota are a better wagon, all around.
