Radio not working

All right . Took the tub out for a fang today and picked up some mighty fine Shark Bay Blue swimmers. Downside was my radio ( GME , I know , I know.... ) had plenty of power to it yet no sound coming out of it at all . Climbing up and checking the cable for the aerial I noticed the plastic coating has disintegrated from the cable itself. What’s the best way to check if the cable or the unit is munted ? . Thanks in advance

If the cable sheath has

If the cable sheath has disintergrated and exposed the braid...... its stuffed. Chances are there has been water ingress in to the cable rendering it useless.

On some antennas you can replace the cable, but with most its an intergral part of the antenna and base so you will be up for an new antenna/coax cable.

As for the Radio itself. disconnect the antenna for the radio, turn it on, turn the squelch down and the volume up. You should hear something..... even static.

Without some knowledge and test gear all you can do is part swap. Try a known good antenna on you radio, if it works....great..... if not you have a radio or power supply problem.

I just had a brainwave . I’ll take the head unit to my Yacht tomorrow and give her a go on that aerial. If it works I’m up for a new base . Whoo hoo , problem no more ✌️. If it doesn’t work then I’m up for a a new base and a head unit

Funny, spent 2 hrs at the islands trying to fix a mates GME VHF last week,

If its making no sound but doing everything else (transmitting, screen lit up etc) its the speaker not the aerial, same as my mates.

Prob not worth fixing, they are quite well known for not handling moisture
