All you need is a light

Mon, 2010-03-22 22:27

All you need is a light action flick rod of no more than 7ft and to suit lines up to 4kg line.

Light action graphite rods can start from as little as $60-$70. There are tonnes to choose from.

Oceanside Tackle has something coming up.....so keep watching!!

a 2 - 4kg bream rod around 7'. You don't need a specialist squid rod, but they are nice if you can afford it.

GLADIATOR Egi Equip rods

Tue, 2010-03-23 09:39

Guys

We manufacture 3 different Egi specific rods. They are 7'2", 8'1" and 8'10". All blanks are made from hi modulus (40 tonne ) Toray graphite which is the best Japanese graphite you can buy. These rods have a huge following especially in Sydney and Melbourne and have been developed from original blanks that are sold for the Japanese squid fishing market. They feature excellent parabolic actions that wont pull the Egi from the flesh when they go for a lunge. All feature low rider guides for punching small lures a long way. PM Ryan for a price.

Cheers

Has anyone ever actually had a jig pull through the flesh of a squid tentacle?

I have quite a few times Ben, but I reckon it would probably due to "operator error".

I generally use a handline to squid with (I just like the hands on feel) and have at times given the jig a big yank thinking that it was hooked up in weed, when the jig got back to the boat it had a chunck of squid on it............. Must have been a good sized squid down deep.

Cheers Steve

beta you get, the ratio of dropped/pulled squid will decrease as you get used to landing them. As said before, light graphite rods are the go matched with a small spin I reackon! Good luck.

i would recommend a hearty

i would recommend a hearty rise evolution but they're not exactly $100 rod either, they're sold by the site sponsors, oceanside and the tackle shack.
But in saying that, anything 6-7ft with weight class up to about max of pe1.5 and a very slow taper, as you dont set the hook but let the jig work its trick hook magic on its own. All egi/squid rods are slow taper for that reason and so you dont pull hooks through the squid.

I actually have had squids pull through alot but i DO squid alot. Alot of people might not have had it happen much but how much do they squid. Also depends on the action.
My techniques are quite aggressive and if a squid is on and i dont notice, im definately gonna rip it apart.

Rods to squid arent that expensive, but if you want a rod specifically made for squidding then, it might run you up a few in coin. They can actually get pretty costly depending on who makes em.
You dont need to be too fancy, basically look for a medium heavy bream/placcy rod. They're usually slow taper and strong enough to bomb out a good size jig off the boat. Even a starlo stix, dropshot etc would do it. Light bream and placcy rods usually got a very soft tip and are fast taper which makes it hard throwing the jig and easier to pull hooks, so heavier slow taper is the go.
I find that choosing a rod for boat squidding rather than shore squidding is easier. Since you generally dont have to heave the lure out so far lol. Theres more range of short flickys out there than long ones.

The Pflueger Trions are a good sort that arent overpriced.
Come over to oceanside and well sort you out. Got a sick range of jigs, accessories/addons and jigbags to check out also. We'll have something to suit what you're chasing..

Hope that helps your question mate.
