i believe they are called kob in south africa
i wonder how similar they are to our mulloway and how big ours can potentially grow. cheers

From what
I can find there the same species, same scientific names. Just different growth rates and potential size. I think the Aus record is 42.5kg.
Hows this for a Black jew - 45kg I think.

Seems that one of the 3 South African species is the same as the Australian mulloway which is
Argyrosomus japonicus mulloway.( Also known as 'jewfish' previously called Argyrosomus hololepidotus) - DPI NSW.
South African Kob Species
Argyrosomus japonicus - dusky kob (mulloway)
The dusky kob matures at the age of 6years and is about 1m then. They can reach the age of about 42 at which they are around 75kg.
Argyrosomus inodorus - silver kob (mulloway)
Argyrosomus thorpei - "half kob" (mulloway)

Awsome fish that's for sure, releasing it must have been a task let alone weighing it.
As for Black Jew, I was in the top end recently and the talk is that it will soon be called Northern mulloway and not before time but they sure as hell smoke our local Mullys for fight.
I,ve got an article here in an old 70's mag about the local African's forming a circle in the ocean around schools of these monsters rounding them up for market.
