Busselton Jetty next weekend

Hi fisho,

I am heading down to Busselton Jetty next weekend but I have not fish there before.

Could anyone advise me what sort of fish i can get from there and how heavy/light should my gear should be?

I have braid line 5lb,10lb,15lb, 20lb and a mono 25lb.

Also,

I am trying to get hold of a line gaff. Has anyone seen one of these in a Perth shop recently or know where to buy them? I am located south of the river.

Thanks in advance :)

Fished it heaps when I was

Fished it heaps when I was young and still love it.

Bring squid jigs!!!

Line depends what you're chasing - PLENTY of rays, and the odd mulloway, sambo, salmon, tailor... I've seen all kinds of stuff being caught off there lol - pinks, sharks, bonito, massive tailor lol, big skippy, list goes on.

The squid, herring and garfish will be there 99% of the time.

Not sure about the line gaff though, call Mike at Anglers spot I remember seeing them there a while ago.

If it's windy and cold it aint much fun. Also make sure u got the fishing ruler with u & keep the place clean just so ppl can see we do the right thing more than anything else

Thanks for the info and advice.

I have the fisheries stickers with me in my tackle box at all times BUT... i mainly use it for bream, flathead, tailor and skippy. Have not caught many different fish. But usually i chuck the one that I am not sure of back into the water.

No idea for squid though... but will find out :)

We will be staying nearby for two nights :) School holiday so he and his family (4 month-old baby girl) decided to make a trip down Busselton (they are teachers btw) :)

Will post up some pics if we can catch any decent fish...haha

Wellcome to Busso. Monfsts

Fri, 2011-07-08 12:00

This time of year you can expect mulloway to hit the jetty from 7 o'clock at night onwards but depends on the weather. Some of them can go over 20 kilo's and the preferred bait is whole squid. Pinkies are also a chance mainly of the larger variety 10 kilo's plus and my preferred bait is live yellow tail. John Dory can also be caught along with sambo's and the odd yellow tail Kingy. I use low stretch mono 15 lb and a line gaff is not esential as there are some platforms a metre out of the water. Good luck.

Number of lines

Sun, 2011-07-10 21:13

Hi Howard went out a couple of weeks ago and there was a group that had at least 3 or 4 hand lines each with each person taking up a good 20m of the jetty.the lines were draped right across the jetty,it was like running a gaultlet of booby traps, with a coupling of them being rude to my wife who had followed up later. It is Fools like that that shut public beaches to us fishos that take the time to do the right thing

Fishing on the Busso Jetty snipesleher

Mon, 2011-07-11 02:19

Just got notification from Rec-fish West about some funding from our license fee's that could be directed to building platforms alongside the main jetty for fishers to use to get them out of the way of the tourists and the jetty train. This would help solve the problem a little but you've got to remember we've got a real bum fight going on here at the moment because the Shire Council failed to listen to what the majority of the locals want on the jetty so of course your going to get some civil unrest ( the Shire calls it anti-social behaviour ). what ever. Jetty folk lore says "what happens on the jetty stays on the jetty" and the last thing we need is some red neck crowd controller start pushing and shoving fisho's around because things could get really nasty. The message we're trying to get out there at the moment is for the guys just to cool it until we can fix the problem thats been handed to us by a very small group of people who consider themselves as mover and shaggers (oops) shakers in our community. Everything takes time so just be patient please.

That old chestnut

Sun, 2011-07-10 21:19

that's been happening for years and will always happen, just the roughnut element who deliberatly ignore rules.

I'd like to see how there attempting to police the NO Smoking, NO drinking rules. Good luck with that.

No Drinking Rules MattMiller

Mon, 2011-07-11 04:21

I don't want to hijack the original post but I was lying in bed thinking about what you said MattMiller and I remembered that one of our present Councillors who worked on the jetty had a drinking sesh. in the UWO with a few of his mates while the liquour ban was in place and now he's on the Jetty Advisory Committee saying people shouldn't drink on the jetty. It's this sort of hypocritical behaviour by our council that compromises their decisions and no wonder the jetty users laugh at the rules.

Is that true

Sun, 2011-07-10 22:08

Is that true Matt ?. If so it's a good way to get rid of 50% of fisho's.

Gee's talk about being a nanna state lol. I understand some of the new rules for the jetty are for the best , but how are the fun police ever going to manage to enforce all these rules ?

There's a lot more history out there that needs to be exposed but my lawyers have advised me not to mention deceit and deception other wise afidavits will start flying around so I'm not. Maybe write a book one day to be published when I'm dead. Send the proceeds to establishing artificial reefs in the bay for rehabilitation purposes to offset the damage the shire causes.

God i remember all those cold

Sun, 2011-07-10 22:36

God i remember all those cold wet winter nights spent out on the jetty chasing Mulloway in the late 90's. It was always fun watching the altercations that happened between the guys that thought they can 'claim' 30m of the jetty and chuck out 4 or more handlines for Mulloway and the jetty walkers constantly tripping up on the lines. Fortunantly i remember the walkers tripping on line wasnt to often as most nights the Mulloway fisherman were out the weather was to horrendous to be going for walkies

But yeah i have seen lines cut, words fly, fights break out, cops called out and even someone thrown off the jetty. Usually between the Mulloway fisherman. Most seem to be very accomadating with each other and the tourists and stick to the two line limit, but you'll always get the group of local bogans that think the own the jetty. In all the years i grew up down there though i never once saw anyone come and enforce any of the jetty of Fisheries rules at night in winter.

Been out a few times recently too, not much has changed.

I remember i few years ago someone had some form of metal inserts on the soles of their boots and was going along the jetty and 'stomping' on the lines as he walked past cutting them. Think that ruffled a few feathers for a while.

Wow, didnt know that there

Wow, didnt know that there were so many things going on with the Jetty, from council related issues to local fisho or non fisho stories. Good to read about these and getting to know the background of the jetty a bit more before wetting my line there.

Hey Howard, dont worry about hi-jacking this post, I got enough "fishing or fish specific" related info to keep me excited and informed. A bit of background info is good for me. It's a good balance :)

hahaha, I would love to catch a decent fish as I have not caught anything more than 1kg other than stingray hahaha...

Just curious, could a 20lb powerpro braid line + 20lb flurocarbon hold a decent fish like Mulloway? :D

Perhaps you've misunderstood

Thu, 2011-07-14 11:21

how the jetty works. Most guys down here use 200lb+ handlines or solid (30lb+) boat rods with 100lb+ leaders for Mulloway. The need for such leaders is the pylons, at least half of the time when hooked they go straight for the jetty and around the pylons. It's not a structure to mess around with light gear on big fish.

I'm not exactly sure whats around out there ATM (havn't been out for a while) but there should be plenty of bread and butter species like Herring, Gardies, Skippy (nearer the end) and Squid. Might need to give it a day to settle to find these species though.

There's always a chance of finding Tailor and some Snapper may be around but there often hard to find.

Oh my gosh!!! Are you serious...?? That's how ignorant I am.

I have no idea ppl use such heavy line, never been there other than the front bit which sells souveniers.

Ok, maybe I should not aim or hope to hook a mulloway with my gears in that case... just those bread and butter fish!

Yeah mate

Thu, 2011-07-14 15:14

serious. Main reason being that 90% of the Mulloway that are caught off the jetty are over 10kg, regularly over 15kg.

Hey guys,We went and we came

Mon, 2011-07-18 09:21

Hey guys,

We went and we came back nothing on Friday night... the water condition was quite bad. No one caught anything other than 2 herrings and 1 cuttlefish at the end of the jetty.

Matt, you were right, those regulars got their hand line ready, 100lb line but caught nothing as well.

A few group of fisho walked pass us with no catch/success... It was a bad night. No squid, no fish, only a few crab swimming around.

We use berley, chopped up the old bait and chuck it in but it was still the same. In fact, I accidentally left my berley cage behind too :(

So Channy, you didnt miss anything at all... it was bad trip! haha

Thanks everyone for all the inputs.

Went for a bit of fishing and crabbing on the jetty tonight and I've never seen the ocean so muddy. Every time I pulled up a crab net a big plume of mud came with it. You dont expect this to happen in the ocean down our way and untill it clears up no fish. Something's not right at the moment with the whole fishing experience on the Jetty.
