My 1st decent Ray in WA - Smooth Ray

She smoked me saturday morning at my fav beach spot and I decided to go back tonight for a 2nd round effort.

Saturday morning she levelled my rod with the beach and I was too slow getting the rod out of the steel rod holders - this time I was prepared. Send out a herring flap bait and within 20 min got stuck into it.

She made 4 runs - the second which was close to a 30mt - 40mt run. Slowly took my time to bring her - 30 min later she was on the beach. Took my shot and helped her back into the water. Must say she had a lotsa things to say as she was making weird noises like 'spitting and grunting' - when I turned her round to get back into the water.

Great session and a great fish.

Her width was 1.25mt and I estimate close to 30kg .

Great effort by the sounds of it. Takes some work to nurse them into the beach.

Thks Soupster, yea - with these size rays you have to nurse them carefully. And applying too much drag will just snap the line. Bit of a tug of war, give and take situation.

Nice one! Had my rod levelled once - by about 10kg of weed coming in with a smashing wave - didn't go back for seconds though. Some massive rays swimming around. Good catch!

Dont worry Sharktale - my 1st

Mon, 2011-07-18 09:14

Dont worry Sharktale - my 1st exp fishing with Ragbag and Kwazulu here in OZ was a total emabarressment for me - took both my rods and 20kg of seaweed - lost tackle, lost line - untill my brain kicked in how to work accross and over it and NOT too put it back in the rodholder, jst to work the 1 rod. Hate the seaweed as it can be very costly. Better yet - just avoid the beaches with sea weed. She was a tough one, had to give her slack every now and again, even more so tryiong to get her back, she's got a heavy a#ss.

well done mate, congrats!

Chasing yesterdays fish rarely pays off for me but you made a plan and got revenge!

Just wondering, were you using steel trace or just heavy mono?

Cheers good to know. I figured mono would be ok but I always seem to end up using steel when chasing rays.
