Record tiger shark

I guess most of you have seen the record Tiger shark caught in the Sunday Times today. Yep great catch and all, I'm just wondring where the the shark itself is going to end up? If it's the tip then why land it in the first place????? cause I'm sure a shark that size is no good to eat? I thought the days of catching trophy fish were over?

saw it on PerthNow

Some nasty, nasty comments on there about killing it for a photo. Probably didn't do the fishing community as a whole any good.

Bet if that shark was in the swim zone at cottosloe in summer, it would be a differnet story and it would be a "deal with that monster" instead.

I havent seen that yet

Get the paper about 2pm up here in karratha. Old news then.

Certainly just a Kill, and what for. But we dont know if the fish died during battle. So I dont think there is a point a slagging and bagging unless we know the whole story.

Mercury alone in large sharks will place you in danger, dont worry about the other heavy metals that have built up in their system. They are all nasty and present.

There was a couple of large tigers caught up here in the Dampier Classic over the last few years, and due to the long fight they expired. Whether we ban light line fishing to not stress the fish for that long is another matter. I personally dont like having a fish on the end of the line to long because of this risk. Yes I dont fish for bream with 50lb braid (with the latest braids on the market you could its so light) but trying to get a 260kg shark in on 10kg line, or a 27kg on 1kg as was the case this year, Im not sure thats correct.

you no it amazes me at people reactions

Sun, 2011-08-14 13:57

yes i no its an animal but its no different to killing a large pig! there are massive amounts of those sharks up there so the few that do get caught in these comps is not doing any harm to there population! crasny1 how can you say lets ban light line fishing? you could just see it light line fishing banned one year all fishing banned the next! it is a sport and most fish are released to live another day! and yes its a kill! WHAT FOR??  for a WORLD RECORD which will stand for a fair while im guessing!  seems every one is getting a little to silly when it comes to being GREEN!

According to the article it

Sun, 2011-08-14 14:11

According to the article it wasn't dead. Snappermiles you woild usually kill a large pig to feed alot of people not for the sake of it. The resons that' there are a massive amount of sharks up there ' is not an excuse. It's not about being green as I kill fish for a feed. It's about the wastefulness.

Edible

Sun, 2011-08-14 15:32

That size are edible, ask the Asians, we used to cut them up bigger than that, put them in to the brine tank to chill them, plastic wrap and freeze the pieces for export to Asia. They would take all sizes and types and we couldn't keep up with demand.

A catch like that one is always going to cause an uproar about it going to waste except for the jaws , which will end up on someones wall no doubt alongside the photos and catch certificate.

One good thing is that anglers are getting better educated and most know roughly what a fish will weigh while still in the water and won't kill it unless its going to be a definite chance of beating the record not just for a personal trophy

you would need a hell of alot

Sun, 2011-08-14 16:07

you would need a hell of alot of pacience to catch something that big on such light line, wouldnt of thought it would tire it out with such light pressure

Tiger sharks have a habit

Sun, 2011-08-14 17:10

of coming to the surface for short periods during the fight.  When hanging fish was the norm this habit assisted light tackle anglers catching tigers as switched on crews would manoeuvre the boat to be right over the fish when it came to the surface and in would go the flying gaffs.

Used to catch them that size

Sun, 2011-08-14 18:18

Used to catch them that size off the samson jetty when we were younger only a stone throw to Honeymoon cove and the front beach. Was great fun on a rope in the middle of the night.

Dunno what the problem is here

Sun, 2011-08-14 18:32

The bloke kept a tiger as it was a world record to claim it. What he does with it is his business, no one elses!!! Maybee we should head up another post with, "what would you do if you landed a potential world record tiger". No one stops to think of how many this crew has let go along the way before they got that fish. Good on the bloke and crew for that capture. Congratulations and I hope your claim is sucessful.

Comes down to a personal

Sun, 2011-08-14 19:45

Comes down to a personal decision, I regret the day I strung up a big Tiger only to dump it back at sea, still remember the feeling as it sank out of view. Saying that I definitely don't begrudge these guys keeping this one, it's a record and that's what their in it for so congratulations is forthcoming. These fellas don't make it a habit of killing big sharks.

Moving forward I reckon (not necessarily agree) capture competitions will be a thing of the past.

To equate a predator at the top of it's food chain (triangular remember) with vermin is folly, if there were massive amounts of these fish there wouldn't be massive amounts of much else. We are all beginning to understand how finite it is (I hope).

there hell winging about that

Mon, 2011-08-15 00:23

there hell winging about that tiger shark on perth now, there in plague proportion in dampier these people clearly havnt fished the area and seen your coral trout get smashed time and time agen. shame to see it go to waste, but it was a world record. there would deffinately be a commercial market in asai that would love a shark that size it it was treated correct like canarvonite has said. they where smoking alot of the fish at the gantry aswell so not all went to waste. alot would have been used in berley trails to lure the big sharks in.... so technically not wasting it feeding the big grey ones

i's one shark, a big one at

Mon, 2011-08-15 10:07

i's one shark, a big one at that and well done fellas, so who's asked the question about all the other spieces captured and weighed in at the comp, what happened to them, all those queenies, trevally, barracuda, tuna that no one eats, on ly the cobia and spaniards would probably make the table.

If you take the capture section away from fishing comps you lose the true sport, it will then just come down to who can find the fish and land them the fastest not who can land a good fish on light line.

put it this way, they tag it they get 500 points and get nothing, claim the fish and they get 2100 odd points and they won two prizes for capture from two separate fish, go tag and release and you might as well make it a billfish comp for 4 days.

took them 8 hours to tow it back around to Dampier that night to make a 10am weigh it too, thats dedication

All the more reason to

Mon, 2011-08-15 11:48

All the more reason to educate and implement the "lenght to weight" calculator system - it is used everywhere else in the world - why not here.

I see catches all over the world - record catches - Europe / USA / Africa and they all use the same system - measure the fish, then use your weight calculator specific to that country's saltwater species to establish the actual weight. A no brainer....then take your trophy photos and send the fish off to fight another day.

I'd say that's the way it

Mon, 2011-08-15 12:09

I'd say that's the way it will head Blou, then you'll be able to calculate points per line class to weight/length, next problem will be our responsibility to release fish in good nick and the line classes will come under fire etc etc.
