I have also found tuna to be a great bait for them. Spanglies are also great bait. Head out deep, and load your hooks up with as much as you can fit on them.

Fresh fillets/strips on gamakatsu circles work well.;)

Another excellent bait is the wings off smaller fish like red throats, charlies etc. Very resistant to pickers and reds certainly smash them.

Regarding loading up with as much bait as possible, while big reds like big baits you don't want to clog up the gape of the hook to much as the point will often bury itself in the skin/flesh when a fish hits resulting in a missed hookup.

mackie...if you can trawl one up on the way out, best bait around!

If not reds do like jigs too, But have found plastics are probably 3rd best with jigs and bait top 2.
