Reef 1 Trawler nil

Took a drive up the coast today to have a look at the trawler that came in a couple of days back.By all accounts they had trouble with their auto pilot and found themselves nearly high and dry.Carnarvon sea rescue got the may day call around 830pm and they couldn't get the crew off untill first light the next morning. It made a long day for the rescue boat crew, radio operator and crew of another fishing vessel standing by waiting for conditions to improve enough to enact the rescue.

In the end it was done safely without any injuries or damage to rescue crews or vessels.A job well done in trying conditions

Hard

Its pretty hard to get in to it.Its about 3-4nm south of Cape Cuvier and requires quite a bit of heavy sand work with tyres let down.

I had the radio operator with me and it took us down 3-4 tracks untill we found the right one.

they should drag into deeper water

Fri, 2010-01-01 15:58

and sink that sucker - artifical reef! They seem to do that a lot more on the east coast than they do here for whatever reason.....

Artificial Reef

Fri, 2010-01-01 17:30

There is an old burnt out trawler thats already been stripped for sinking as an artificial reef moored in the channel south of town. Its been there for a few years because as the story goes they couldn't guarantee it would stay in one spot in the case of a cyclone.

I would be the only one that would like to tow it out and sink it at a secret location known only by ME!!!

They are probably waiting on the insurance company making a decision on its fate

I saw a show

Fri, 2010-01-01 17:37

about a cyclone that ripped through QLD and it tore up 3T chunks of the barrier reef and tossed them around. Amazing force and power!

I'd be surprised if it could toss around a sunken trawler though, they'd weigh a considerable amount surely?  Even just a basic 60' steel hull would be in excess of 25T (depending on length) wouldn't it??

Its just a bare shell, everything that can be removed has.Agree with your guess on around 25 tonne.

Next time I'm down that way I'll take a couple of shots of it and put them on the site

Believe me the sea has alot

Fri, 2010-01-01 18:01

Believe me the sea has alot of energy in her.  Back in South East Asia, I use to fish a wreck of a freighter in 50m that shifted position after every monsoon.  It would eventually be found each season, but it didn't change the fact that she was tossed around.
