Reel for a 9ft rock rod

 Hi everyone,

looking for a reel to put on the mrs rod. It is a Lemax president royal 12-40lb rating. Going to be mainly fishing for tailor, mulloway etc.. off the rocks. Something new or 2nd hand no more than $100. I was thinking a penn spinfisher 650ssm? Any other suggestions?

for that price range i would go the reliable penn - chuck some mono on it and still be under the price range.

slammer

if its for the mrs maybe look at a penn slammer, its a bit lighter than the 650 so she will enjoy it more pretty cheap and rugged like the spinfishers

I have that rod... I love it! Caught many tailor on it, some big buggers too! I use a Stradic 5000 or a Freams 4000 on mine but for under though 100, go a  penn slammer or daiwa laguna 4000 size- not as tough as a slammer but heaps lighter and will probably handle braid a bit better

If you can still get a Penn

If you can still get a Penn spinfisher for less than $100 it's good value but the Penns are not up to Japanese standard imo. Gearing is lower so you have to work harder. New Penn Spinfisher V is no better. I know because I used SS650 extensively and I've just got the V as well. My Daiwas and Shimanos are so much better. Just trolled thru BCF website and they have a number of reels on sale. So take your pick. Daiwa Aird for less than $100. You can even get a Shimano Baitrunner at your price. The range you can choose from is too much to guide you. Basically for 9ft you can go down to a 2500/3000 size reel in Daiwa or 4000 in a shimano.
