If you're thinking of
If you're thinking of trolling around perth, I was advised to go for about 15kg, perhaps less for a second set.
I have a Shimano TLD20II, 15kg mono and a 15kg daiwa solid glass trolling rod, but I'm waiting to actually bag anything on it, the warm water sure has been slow this year!

Dirk, the Shimano TLD range
Dirk, the Shimano TLD range is excellent value for money and are really solid reels. I have had a TLD25 for a number of years and does a good job with 24kg line for trolling and bottom bashing.

trolling reels
if you want to go lighter about 10-15kg for example, then the Shimano Charter Special is good
it's not lever but star drag then the Tetoka range from Shimano are good.

You can always topshot
You can always topshot with mono if you want the capacity of braid, but the stretch of mono. If you pick the reel to the line you can crank the drag up and know you're not going to exceed maximum anyways. E.g. 50lb line on a saltist/torium/etc works out to just under 50% drag if you crank it as hard as you can, so playing around with it isnt really a problem during a fight (or to adjust strike drag and so on). Star drags can often be lighter. If its just for trolling not bottom bouncing, levers obviously make more sense (just dont discount the stars straight off)
Around perth 15kg would be fine as most people have said. I have a trolling setup with 15kg, but havent even used it yet :p (it used to be my bottom bouncing combo, so used it for other stuff).

TLD25
I have used a TLD25 for land based game fishing for years and it has not missed a beat. I ever really service it or do anything to it, i know, I know, I should and one day will
They are a great reel for the money and will fish 15-24kg, line capacity gets a bit limited on 24kg but if you are on a boat this should not be such a huge concern.

Daiwa SLD's
Got 2 of the Daiwa SLD 30s 1 is single speed the other a 2 speed
Holds about 600m of pe8 braid
Had mine for a few years now and no problems at all, should get the single speed one for under $400
Just another reel to add to the confusion

Can't go past the Shimano
Can't go past the Shimano TLDs or Diawa SLDs whichever way (Holdens and Fords, Toyotas and Nissans etc) If trolling fast fish (pelagics) use mono, but if it's more likely bottom fish (demersals) then braids the go. For Mackerel, Sailfish etc then a Tld 15 size reel with 10 kilo mono is ample but if your after the bigger stuff such as Marlin and Yellowfin tuna then the TLD 25 or 30 sizes with 15 or 24 kilo mono would be better.
Good Luck

Thanks ;)
Thanks guys I notice the shimanos come up a few times and I guess since I want to use them for trolling save me messing with leaders and I might go straight for mono. Daiwa SLD well 400 each a tad to upmarket and would get me shot :) I think a TLD, MArlin would be adream to catch but I would be happy with some nice tuna, mackrel or dolphin fish ;) what size line would you recommend for that ?

Another vote for the TLDs.
Another vote for the TLDs. I've got an older 25 with the handle upgrade and have caught a lot of good fish with it. Don't use it much any more but it's still going strong. I think the newer ones already have a bigger knob. The Tyrnos is another good reel but a little more expensive. Size line 40-50lb.
GO BLUES.

I'd go a Tyrnos
Don't get me wrong TLDs are very good, and value for money.
Tyrnos is basically a metal bodied TLD which is obviously stronger for running braid, and still fine for mono.
The only thing i don't like with TLDs are their little handle that pisses you right off when your trying to retrieve line, sure you can upgrade the TLD and put a Tyrnos handle on it but why not for an extra $100 get a Tyrnos straight out.
Also the Tyrnos are a lot quicker plus with a bigger handle the line retrieval is going to alot more than the TLD per crank.
Yes Tyrnos may be a heavier allround reel but nothing you can't deal with.
Tyrnos 16 and 8-10kg mono for trolling metro (only go 15kg+ up north, as there are alot more bities) would be my pick for sure...
Cheers,
