Quality whiting rig

So as of late I am slowly one rig at a time trying to upgrade my equipment from cheap arse rex hunt style type combos to some good quality higher dollar fishing equipment.

The bigger end of town is easy to navigate through but on the smaller end it is alot more confusing to me.

I am a big fan of daiwa gear, especially the saltigas but they dont make them in a very small outfit for chasing whiting etc from a boat.

Anyone got any recomendations?

Certates, but then thats

Certates, but then thats completely overkill for whiting. I'm presuming there will be some KG's instead of just schoolies? Sols are very smooth and a small size would make a nice light combo paired with the right rod. Certates come in 2000 size as well

Hmm yeah they look good, so many choices...

Wed, 2009-03-11 22:32

Theres the certate hyper 2500R as well which is a sexy reel, as well as the red back series.... so many choices for this size reel. Too many choices is sometimes worse than not enough

Well if you have REALLY deep

Thu, 2009-03-12 00:27

Well if you have REALLY deep pockets import a Daiwa Exist 1003 this is as close as you will get to a small saltiga I have one and I went to use a luvias and found that it was also very good for less than half the price.

However if the reel will just be used for whiting i think that going to those extremes would bea bit of a waste as you wouldn't need such gear something more like a TD-Sol would be Ideal and could easily handle almost anything you might get as a bycatch.

So in short if you have Really deep pockets get an exist

If you are just looking for something a bit more than decent but not insanely expensive then i can't reccommend TD-Sol Enough

Now the luvias is ideal if you feel like spoiling yourself a little it is a step up from the TD-sol and even with the high-end stuff I have i still use my luvias all the time and it would be my pick if i were buying.

It would help if you could give us an figure of what you are looking to spend on the whole outfit.

Thanks for the advice there mate.....

Nice to hear from someone who is using some of the reels I am looking at. As for price, well it isnt too much of an issue, obviously If I can get a reel for half the price of the top of the range one thats close to being just as good then thats always an option although spending $1000 on a reel doesnt scare me either.

The more I look at the certate hyper 2500R the more I like it so it may end up being the reel I get, it is a bit big though for whiting but at least it can handle a slightly larger fish if one swims through while Im trying for a KG or sand whiting etc.

What do you reckon? too big or not?

If its just for whiting,

Thu, 2009-03-12 10:00

If its just for whiting, then theres not much point spending when you arent going to get much more benefit out of it. Though, if it was to be a very light gamefish reel, it might warrant getting something better if you're going to get a lot of use out of it and you can afford it. Think in terms of value not price though.

The sol used to be my favourite reel (until it got stuck in the shop for a while :S), and you'd be pretty happy with that I think (its a very smooth reel). Try it out and you might be surprised. I quite like the 2000 size as the I knob is nicer to hold IMO and its really light. Fun on dhuies too Wink

For size, if you're using it for other fish as well, I wouldnt say its too big, but just for whiting its bigger than it 'needs' to be. Depends whether a 15% weight saving is going to matter to you (or 25% for the steez). I'm a fan of very light gear though, so I may be biased.

What rod and line are you thinking of using?

I always ask myself "is this new bit of gear I am about to buy going to help me catch more fish?" If the answer is "no", then I don't bother upgrading.
With whiting fishing, its more about terminal gear and technique than rod and reel in my opinion.
But then again, a bit of bling doesn't hurt anyone....Wink
Good luck finding the perfect set up, its a confusing market as you suggest. Though perhaps one of Honsu's egiforce rods might be the go. I haven't checked them out yet but they sound like they might be suitable.

Pretty close Andy, but mine

Thu, 2009-03-12 10:24

Pretty close Andy, but mine probably closer to "is this new bit of gear I am about to buy going to help me have more fun catching fish?" Laughing Its all about the how for me.

The egiforce rods are quite nice and i'm a fan of mine, but might be little long for boat work. Now if only honsu can import the jig force rods.... Wink

No I reckon it will be

Thu, 2009-03-12 01:33

No I reckon it will be brilliant, I have the standard certate 2500r Custom and while a bit heavier than the exist or the luvias it will last for years they are super smooth and the drag is exceptional and the reel will handle any by-catch or if you decide to use it for larger fish will still be up to the task I honestly forgot about that reel and it even has the same gearing as a saltiga so you know it will stand up to a lot of abuse.

if you can afford it I would get it. you won't Regret it.

be a man and get a shimano . you have twinpowers and sustains for the med range (still better than most of daiwas top end gear) and then aspire fireblood and stella for top end

Brenz, didn't you just score a job at a tackle store that happens to be a shimano agent.

Have you used these shimano reels extensively? i.e. for more than just one trip and on one fish.

Kane I've got a 2000 TD Sol/Heartland Daiwa combo which is brilliant for light tackle salmon etc. Pretty strong little reel with a nice drag, has survived three good salmon seasons and is still going strong on little gt's, queenies etc.

I've also been hammering a saltiga 3500 game/dorado 70s combo for the last 13 months on trevs, queenies, xos giant herring, mack tuna etc. Faultless but overkill just for whiting.

I've also been hammering an 8000pg Twinpower loaded with PE5,  and to a lesser extent, a 20000 Stella. All of the quality reels are top gear Kane, so anything from the Shimano or Daiwa stable will be satisfactory IMO.

Funny how things change though, 20 years ago Daiwa and Shimano were Jap crap which most serious anglers wouldn't have been seen dead with.

doug and john take a look

Thu, 2009-03-12 17:55

john take a look down the page a bit i put a comment/recomendation about daiwa to. yes i have started a new job and yes we do stock shimano but we also stock daiwa . i am also mates with the daiwa rep not shimano. i have owned daiwa for the past 4 years and used and used them . i also have owned shimanos and feel i am entitled to an opinion and dont think that any smart comment is due for it . and yes doug i did use diawa extensivly whilst at the shop but that is cause that is all you had !!!!! i am not saying daiwa is shit but he asked for a whiting reel for the right price and i gave him my opinion IS THAT OK? and just for the records i just brought a daiwa certate the other day so obviously not a bias opinion !!!

Fair enough

Thu, 2009-03-12 18:05

That's fair enough Brenz but i wouldn't rate a sustain or a twinpower ahead of half of daiwa's top end gear.

Personally if your going to make a statement like that you need to justify it a bit.

All have some good gear. Diawa, Van Staal, Alutechnos etc, you just have to find a way thru the maze to get the best (at your price) from them all.

has anyone mentioned the Diawa Sol. What a beauty and looks the part. See what that would look like with a curran C21 carrot stick. Both Orange.

Wow what a response, .....

Yep I got some good info out of all of that.

I guess most of the time I will use it for whiting but thats not to say I wont use the rod and reel for other species as well, I fish for pretty much anything the ocean can throw my way.

It may end up having a salmon on the end of it, a small snapper, flathead who knows, its a big ocean out there with lots of fish in it and also the way i see it, if it is a top quality reel, overkill or slightly too big for whiting it will quite possibly / hopefully last me a lifetime.

I have a 1000 stella love it

I have a sol and love that too but if i had to go away on an extended trip and needed a no holes barred reliable reel i would take a diawa every time the reason being if you have a look at the moving parts the diawa has far less to do the same job.The shimano is more finesse you need to take more care with it.If i had to choose one reel it would be a small certate just dont drop it in the sand.....no reel likes itLaughing

I use a Diawa Tierra 2500

Thu, 2009-03-12 20:04

I use a Diawa Tierra 2500 matched to Tierra rod for my KG's with 10lb braid.  Does the trick nicely.  also have a 3000 luvia spooled with 20lb flicking softies to snapper etc but find this a little to big and prefer the 2500 for the KG.  Also sometimes use my Sahara 2500 spooled with 6lb for the kgs on a lighter rod at times or for flicking small lures.  Prefer the 10lb in case something else comes along though I once caught a 2ft bronzie on the 6lb (but he ran me all around the boat several times and was lucky i didn't get bitten off - hooked in corner of mouth luckily).

Have even used the tierra off a few surf beaches for salmon Caught about 30 in one hour once.  Have waded in amounst the 12 ft surf rods and belted out a little lure a few times gets a few looks at first but then ended up catching more than the biguns.

All fun

gear. As you said Paul, it is the holden v ford thing - but on a fishing level.

Go the Abu Garcia Soron - now that would make a great whiting reel.

And don't forget the coke bottle.
