Registering boat trailers
Submitted by Ashen on Fri, 2014-01-24 17:51
Hey guys
I know someone who is retired and wants to sell his 3mtr ally dinghy/motor/trailer for a very cheap price (less than $500). The dinghy seems to be in great condition and licensed, the motor is an Evinrude 6hp 2 stroker that is still running well and spits water etc.
The only thing is that the trailer is not licensed. However, it seems to be in good condition as well. Anyone know how much it'll cost to re-register?
Thanks

Hin number
The hin number should not be needed for a traler rego, for what you have as long as the lights work and the tyres and mud guards are good you should sail through.
This habit is getting expensive!

yeh peter you need a hin
yeh peter you need a hin validation if the boats not registered. You need a VIN stamp / plate on a trailers but. Theres a lot of things that need to be correct for a trailer or anything to pass. But for a small boat you dont need any big chains or breaks or anything, thats the hard stuff. Post a picture and some of us may be able to tell you if we can see any downfalls.

Thanks guys. The trailer is in very good condition. New lights, not much rust etc. The old plates are still on the trailer if that helps with the situation?
How do I put a pic up?

I bought an old boat which I'm still doing up (slowly) and the rego had run out, but still had the plates and the previous owner gave me the licence paper work.
Just went into the licencing place and paid for it, didn't have to take it over the pits or anything.

My Pits experience
I found out when I sold the last boat that the trailer rego had been sent to the wrong address and it was in fact unlicensed so had to go over the pits. The two things they picked on at the pits was unstamped chains - need AS stamps on each link, and the serial number needed to be stamped on the trailer. Recommended me to a place around the corner that did both on the spot (cynic says it was a related business) and went straight back. Surprised me as it was a dunbier trailer in good nic circa 2008 vintage.
I did get a refund on the fees because DOT admitted their error on the address.

Fair dinkum
It was only my cynical side that thought that but sometimes you wonder - the regs do state stamped chains and serial numbers stamped into the chassis of the trailer. Irony was I ended up with a lighter weight chain... The guy at the fab shop said he got a lot of that sort of business and charged me bugger all for the work, he was literally just around the corner.

Chain
I had the same thing with my 2007 dunbier when the missus forgot to renew it. Only issue was the chains as they did not have the stamp on each link or if they did it may have been lost when galvanized.
I think the rules changed somewhere along the way so while a pain in the arse I copped it. No big deal. As you say that's what the rules say.
This was at a private company that did the inspection and they referred me to a local trailer mob around the corner who helped straight away. Like any business they make contacts and are offering to help you out by sending you to someone who can help. People would get pretty pissed if they just said tuff find someone yourself.
