releasing abalone
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2008-11-16 06:48
after a discussion with Mako Magic and a third person we were wondering if anyone knew if abalone survived after it has been dislodged off the rocks or do they just die?
my thought would be surviving but this third person said they die

my mate worked for fisheries
and basically the survival rate of a removed abalone was very low. Once you remove them, you can basically assume they will die if "returned". They simply do not re-attach back to the reef. That is why you measure them to ensure they are size before removing.

their blood does not clot
Also:
It is safe to assume they die. Their blood contains no coagulants and does not clot, so any scratches or cuts inflicted while 'popping' them off the rocks means they bleed to death.
It's a serious issue and people really should only be 'popping' ones they intend to keep.
There's good material on it but basically Huggy's explanation and the one above sums a bit of it up.
I remember reading a report that people were discarding as much as 30% of their catch to 'upgrade', on one of the surveys along the metro coast - basically all dead :(

My brother has made up a tool with a rounded edge and a gauge for that reason. It lets you measure before you pluck, and it doesn't ding them up because their blood doesn't clot. We missed this season but hope to get some into the shops for next season.
