Removing a boat from trailer (big not tinny)

just curious as to how do you take your boat off the trailer so you can work on the trailer so you dont need to bend in all sorts of wierd ways . Im talking about a boat from say 16 foot and up. I did some work on my trailer a while back and it was very awkward getting right in under the boat to work on it. Taking into account alli and glass. i know with alli you could probably just pull the boat onto the ground and rest it on old tires but what about glass. I had thought about tying the back of the boat up to something solid and driving the trailer out from under it nd sitting it onto frames of some sort but then what happens if the frame gives way...........Any other ways it could be done without a crane to lift it straight up

find yourself a mooring or pen for however long you need and leave the boat in the water thats assuming the trailer is road worthy

If the boat is on a roller

Mon, 2010-06-21 07:36

If the boat is on a roller trailer roll it off with few large blocks of wood or tires to support the keel in a few places.  I actually had to do that with my old 18ft boat and it was alot heavier then a ali boat, especially since the 220litre tank was full.

To get it back on, clip it on and roll the trailer back under the boat.  The trailer moves, not the boat.

It's easy, As alfred says but I tied the back off to a tree or some anchor point put one tyre under the keel at the back disconect the saftey chain and get somebody to drive the car forward a little at a time but keep the winch wire attached and just release a bit at a time, as the boat comes off put a couple of tyres either side at the back to take in the dead rise and then add tyres under the keel as you can get access to the underside the two tyres at the sides will keep it upright, to put it back on just wind the trailer under the boat but dont attach it to the car. Storage rack

Mon, 2010-06-21 08:53

I went through this exercise just before we left for Shark Bay, last month. Had the boat lifted off in Henderson placed in a cradle. Got all the bearings, brakers and rollers checked then went back once I had finished and they lifted it back onto the trailer. It is not the cheapest option but I think it was money well spent and safe. Last thing I wanted was the boat to fall or damage it trying to do it my sellf. 24 foot glass boat.

Mon, 2010-06-21 17:22

It will winch back up easy.

At least thats better than winching it back on from the bitumen at the entrance to Point Peron carpark, cause thats where a mate dropped mine when he borrowed the boat....

Totally agree with the majority of comments above and couldn't have said it any better than alfred and fishy.... drop it off onto the lawn, prop it up with tyres. Back trailer up to boat, disconnect from the car and start winding.

David

Once its on the lawn if it

Tue, 2010-06-22 11:28

Once its on the lawn if it is a drive on trailer, just drive it back up. But don't forget the ear muffs so you don't burn the impeller.Wink

Very easy job. Can be daunting first time but it is easier than it looks. You have to watch the cable tension and i do like the idea of the towel that Degree has put over the cable just in case.

Did it with a mate's boat

Wed, 2010-06-23 17:37

Did it with a mate's boat (5.5m fiberglass) wasn't really very hard at all. Got a load of old truck tires, tied the back of the boat to a tree, unhooked chain + winch and then drove car forward slowly, placing the tires under the back of the boat as the trailer moved forward. once the trailer is fully out the front, the boat is just left sitting on the tires.

getting it back on, you just use the winch and some elbow grease. needed some water on the trailer to to help it slide up.
