Removing Propella off a Mercury Optimax 175hp
Hi Guys,
Pretty sure i got some braid wrapped around the prop (Optimax 175) while out yesterday......just after some advice regarding removing the prop to check.
Watched a couple videos....from that looks like I need a 1 1/16'' socket, then use a block of wood tostop prop moving while remove the large nut holding prop onto shaft/spline. then pull prop off (and washes??). Then clean spline/shaft, and remove any fishing line. re-grease.....was recommending a lithium based grease like Mercurys 2-4c grease. Re-assemble and tighten the nut back up . Looks like may need a torque wrench to set the correct torque.
Am I missing anything? Can anything thing go wrong?? Anything to look out for....or is this something to take to a shop??
cheers for any advice

Pretty much
Thats it.
Behind the prop you should find a cup shaped washer that will (should) keep the braid out of the seals
Any grease on the splines is better than nothing, no real need to buy something fancy.
Dont worry about torquing up, just a nip up til the split pin goes through is sufficient.
The spline is what takes the load not crushing with the nut.
My Suzukis are 1 1/16" also, or 27mm and I carry a socket on board.
Just replaced the shaft seals in one of my gearboxes yesterday, prob should have put up some pics

Ha, thanks mate!
I get a bit blase on posting them these days unfortunately.
We went out for Easter, blew its ass off sat/sun but mon tues was better.
Looked like we were the only recs out there over the weekend
Still didnt get alot of fish but the boys had a blast catching baldies in shallow water on kiddie rods and destroyed both reels
So now have to find some better tiny reels for them.
Will post up some pics!
