Repowering - Quick Question
Submitted by JoRn on Fri, 2014-02-21 15:37
After building my first boat last year, i fitted a brand new Suzuki 4 Stroke 140 hp.
I did a few things wrong here
1) brought a xl shaft when i didnt need it
2) tried to save some $$$ and brought the 140hp instead of 175hp ( as suggested by JNG who did the same thing few months back)
Anyway, ive been offered a brand new Yamaha 175 HDPI for a very good price.
What are the PROs and CONS of moving from a 4 stroke to 2 stroke?
I need to provide a response ASAP and dont have time to do my research.
and how much do you think i could get for my Suzuki? its done 110 hours.

i have a 175 HPDI yammy, 2006
i have a 175 HPDI yammy, 2006 model - love it for fishing, heaps of punch and good on fuel/oil, only issue when cruising is that you get a little wiff of smoke if you go under 5 knots
im looking to upgrade to 4 stroke though because my mrs hates the odd wiff whist we are cruising down the river.

I'm sure you can get around
I'm sure you can get around 10k-12k maybe even more for your motor, I think that's what I sold mine for. But mine had 220hours. Couple years back

4 stroke
everybody seems to be going to 4 stroke's and I think that the HPDI's are being discontinued by Yamaha, good motor though and your boat will be a rocket ship with one, but resale in a few year's won't be good a bit like an ETEC. I have a 140 zuke and reckon it is a sweet motor but would like a 175 just too much money. By the way are you sure your boat doesn't need an XL leg, all offshore boat's these day's need an XL leg outboard

4 stroke vs 2 stroke pros and
4 stroke vs 2 stroke pros and cons
2 stroke.
con - more vibration/noise
con - more smoke/fumes
con - burn more fuel
pro - better holeshot off the mark
pro - generally slightly lighter (for same HP) but gap is closing
4 stroke
Pro - less vibration/quieter
Pro - no fumes/smoke
Pro - fuel efficient
Con - slightly less holeshot (top end about the same)
Con - generally a little heavier but closing as above
I'm about to repower from a 70hp 2 stroke to Yammy 70hp 4stroke - holeshot will be slightly less but not significant (reality given my 2 stroke is getting tired it'll probably be the same or better and definitely better top end speed). main difference is I will be using around 1/3 to 1/2 of the fuel used previously which will extend my range considerably for fuel carried (newer 2 stroke vs 4 stroke will be closer fuel wise but four stroke def better K's per litre)

Mate has a 250 Hpdi and it
Mate has a 250 Hpdi and it has been trouble free. Similar to etec, you need clean fuel and good batteries to keep them happy.
Done some big runs, couple of Montes runs and a few times to the Abrolhos. Does chew a little more fuel than a 4 stroke but that is to be expected.
Should get top dollar for the suzi.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

If your south of the river
If your south of the river give Brett ward a ring as he gave me top dollar for my 140 suzi when I upgraded it to a 175 suzi. I had done 360 hours on mine. I kept the same controls from the 140 suzi and the same hydraulic steering as well. You would want to check to see if yours will be comparable to the yammy as there is another grand (approx) if it doesn't assuming you have hydraulic steering

Personally, with no technical
Personally, with no technical knowledge i would go the 175 suzi every day of the week!
Just been on too many boats with good suzi's!
I would only ever go back to a 2 stroke for holeshot because i was doing bar crossing in a 3m swell haha
