RE:Steering Cable

Just last week my steering cable gave up the ghost were it is now stuck tight and creased up good

Pride Fibreglass hull - Evinrude 50, 1971 72 two stroke, My cable is around 12ft 10 inches or 3900m all most 13 foot

Was told from one place I would need whats written below

Quote:
Ultra-Flex steering kit. Cost 330.00

If you need it fitted you can allow another 200.00 for our services
.

Are they for real ? Can I get it any cheaper any were else.

tell you the truth, I don't know alot about it and I don't want to be taken for a runner

I want to order one today some time this is why I'm asking the question

Doesnt seem to expensive to me

Theyre usually charge around $100 per hour for labour so thats saying its going to take them 2 hours to do the repair, not unreasonable.

Have no idea what the parts should cost but everything marine grade is more expensive than for say parts for a car or caravan etc.

ours went in Leeman three years ago, luckily we had mate (poor bugger came up to go fishing) staying and bob went to Jurien bought the complete steering, think from memory $200 and his mate fitted it, took about two hours then they went fishing.

Have to agree Kane everthing marked with marine or boody vet bills cost a fortune.

No

fat fingures and no circlip pliers - i spent an hour trying so i guess if you can't do something yourself the price was what it was worth.

my steering seeze up pretty bad got 2 pairs of stilsons on to it me an m8 twisted in opisite directions took alot of effort to get them just slightly loose, kept turning the iner shaft and the outer housing in opisite directions about 50 times and it was free as a whistle, ree greased with some graphite free grease, and sanded the burs down on the shaft and it was all sorted.

There is nothing over the top in that quote. Im a marine mechanic and $300-$350 for the kit and 2 hours to do the job sounds on the money.

benny bopster  $270  it

Mon, 2009-03-30 12:22

benny bopster  $270  it cost me to have a new steering cable fitted into my 5.2 m savage. Gotta be a pretty slow worker to stretch it out over two hours if they are professional. Some of the 'big' boating places charge through the nose for little jobs like that and only use apprentices who quite often bugger it up
