Hi all.
I am hoping that one of you wise and knowledgable gentleman out there can help.We are heading to Shark Bay next weekend for a quick 4 day fish. The boat is coming up with us and we are planning on doing some shore based at steep point.Trouble is none of us have fished there before and knowledge of rigs etc is pretty thin on the ground. Can someone help.

Tackle
If you are doing bottom bouncing from the boat a standard paternoster rig with a minimum of 80-100mono.For lures use wire trace again 1oolb minimum.
Never fished from the shore at Steep Point,so expect would be the same as Quobba,50lb mono to the hook and 10-15 down to the sinker .if using one-if sinker snags with fish on it will break off first.Any baits for mackies[floating]use wire--again min 100lb
Hope you do well

Fishing Steep If you are

If you are ballooning, let us know and someone will probably post up a good rig. I would chuck in a few big balloons even if you have no intention of taking helium.
Lure Chucking, 10-12kg line, no bigger than 0.4mm or it won't cast light lures fare enough. Mono is best around the rocks and cliff gaff. Stainless steel wire leader will out fish the black lockweld also.
Bottom bouncing, at the point. Standard tailor rig or a paternoster rig will work fine. Spanglies, mullas snapper and hopefully not too many sharks.
Bottom bouncing, west side. This is the best fun and i prefer this fishing to fishing the point, real alfa male fishing this side. 24kg mono (15kg minimum) on an alvey is the way to go although overheads and eggys will work. Run to a strong 3 way swivel, 15kg to a snapper lead and a very short trace to a 4/0/,5/0, to keep your hook away from the bottom, run 24kg+ to the hook.
The cliffs here are 30-50m from the ocean so a cliff gaff is useless. We bounce/crank the fish up on alveys and solid rods. Take some gloves and you can pull them straight up the cliff face also. The other option is to unbolt your reel, hold the rod over the edge and get your mate to walk backwards with the reel and the fish will end up at your rod tip. The fist friend i took to these cliffs said, bulldust, we can not fish here. 1st cast i pulled up a 3kg pinkie and his look was priceless. Remember to unlock your reel when using 24kg because the sharks will pull you in if in Baldie locked drag mode. We have tied ourselves off at times here, and the rule is after someone has landed a fish/busted off on the bottom the other fisho's must remind that person to back off the drag.

Thanks alot guys.Your help
Thanks alot guys.Your help is much appreciated.Looks like I'll be busy with rigs this weekend.
Sounds as tho the west side is the go.The boat will be based at the bay and we will head up to the point by 4by.Not that keen on heights so I'll leave that to the rest of the boys.I will give them the heads up on safety.Might suggest they tie themselves together while I sneak away and burley up for some big whities.Could be interesting

Hi all Finaly got back
Hi all
Finaly got back from Shark Bay on Sunday. We had a great trip apart from the wind.Apparently the worst they have seen for awhile. On friday we took a run down to Steep Point and were greeted by one hell of a gale. The spray was reaching the top of the cliffs and it was a real battle just to stay on our feet.We slipped around the corner to the sheltered side and dropped a line in without much luck.managed to pull in 4 Rock Cod and maybe 2 eels more than likely the same one. There was another group there ballooning without much luck as well. They had pulled in a Spanish Mac and one of the guys had his hands full pulling in a black tip shark. It was abit frustrating as we could see fish swimming upto ouir rigs but just not havin ago.
Saturday was really nice but too rough outside the bay for the boat so we headed upto Point Peron for a quick fish.I must say that this has tobe one of the most beautiful spots I have ever been to.The colours are just awesome. For most of the day it was just us fishing and fighting the flies. What didn't help was the bait bucket tipping over in the back of the Patrol on the way up.As soon as we opened the door there were a million bloody flies tryin to have ago and they followed us all the way down to the beach. We managed to catch a few Herring and baby macs.I managed to hook up 3 Pinkies, one of which was a good fish and a Manta.Gee they are bloody strong.I am not a small bloke and it was touch and go there for awhile.Thankfully when it broke off it took my rig only.I reakon it had 100m meters of line out.I use an Okuma 15ft X-factor surf rod which casts for miles.Trouble is my line was lying right across the Shags flight path and I reackon I had more bird strikes in 6 hrs than Boeing have had in the last 30 yrs...lol
Sunday was blowing again so we packed up and headed home.It would have been nice to take the boat out for a run but all in all it was a great trip.We enjoyed it so much we are heading up again between april and July to try our luck.Good chance we will do a charter while we are there.
Thanks again for your help guys and if anyone can help with ballooning please feel free.
Cheers
