well we left yanchep at just before 4am and arrived in minilya at just after 4pm so yeah would take a little longer from your place russ, i suppose it will all depend what time you want to arrive into exmouth the next day and how much driving you want to do on day 2.

One tip though Russ

Fri, 2008-06-27 20:53

Just make sure you aren't driving either side of Carnarvon before dawn or after dusk. The kangaroos, goats and other critters can be thick there.

night travel

Fri, 2008-06-27 21:19

We traveled over night up to Onslow (commodore) and only seen the odd cow and roo!! 95kms/hr during the day and 85kms/hr through the night. Left Perth around midday and arrived in Onslow at 6.30am(with 4 stops of 30min)!! As long as your happy not to put the foot into it I find 85 is a good speed if you need to pull up in somewhat of a hurry(ie:when you get a blowout)any faster and the story could have been different!! How ever you do it, drive safe and have a great time. Plenty of pics on your return

Just go and enjoy the time up there, like you say the fuel is a killer but its all worth it. We went up at night last year and arrived half asleep, took two days to get back on track.

Carnarvon Best Western

Sat, 2008-06-28 08:31

We generally drive straight through but no way with kids!! Leave Perth about 6 and it is an easy 10 hour drive to carnarvon from NOR. Just head out through joondalup and the pine plantations as it cuts about 40 minutes. NEver again will I drive in to exmouth at night, winter after rain is probably OK but we did it in summer and I have never seen so many roos and cows on the road in all my life, and I grew up in Western QLD which is pretty bad for that stuff. Tooks us 5.5 hours from the highway into Exmouth. If you can't check in til 2 then no point rushing up there. Brekky in carnarvon then a steady 4-5 hour drive into exmouth

Thats the go Russ, Wintersun Caravan or any of those parks from the Caltex starmart turnoff into the outskirts of town. They are all safe and you wont find any problems. Definately worth the stay over instead of doing the night drive. Ant from Bluewater had a close encounter with the cows last week heading back to Perth and I had a couple of close calls with the roos on Tuesday night coming back. Drove 300km on twilight and night and didn't see one thing until 60km to Exmouth, then there was a 20km stretch where I counted 8 with only one close call. They have slashed the Minilya stretch so the vis is a lot better now.

Look foward to meeting you guys, hopefully the weather will be a little better than what it has been lately. :)

Cheers,
Adam

Sat, 2008-06-28 15:08

If your kids are 15, 16 do they have a Xbox or playstation?
Wii probably wouldnt be good cause kids playing tennis in the back would be a concern :P

You get a dropdown monitor that fits in the roof of cars.

Then they can watch a movie in between playing games.

Dont know about the roadhouse as I usually drop a swag down a track or similar.

I also take packed food in esky as food is not only very bland but very expensive. Make up a fresh salad, rolls, a few cooked snags or colds meat and a roll made by yourself is 100% better then what is served over the counter and 1/3 of the cost.

I used to have a CCS on the way up to Geraldton every month or so when I was in the Bank. It became a tradition.
On the Abrolhos trip with Andrew I was gas bagging about it and low and behold when we get to Badgingarra he walks out with a CCS, complete with transparent brown paper bag (that's the grease doing its work still in the bag)Wink
You can't resist the old CCS.

Just got back Russ - We did the Carnarvon stop over aswell ($88) on the way up, with ham and cheese toasties at Minilya for morning tea  - $12-80 for twoYell

Bugger all Roos - too much grass around.  A few cows between Minilya and Exy.  Passing triples (2 off) into Exy was the hardest thing for the trip.

As Adam said - the grass has been freshly cut - love the smell of fresh cut grass.

Report later, once pics are recieved.
