Rod and reel recommendations
Submitted by Kane H on Wed, 2009-12-30 19:10
At the moment i have a 15 foot Shakespear ugly stik Gold surf rod and a Shimano Seido 10000FA reel.
Heading up to exmouth for some landbased fishing and wanted to know what i should get for another rod and reel. Want a setup to fish with bait and a setup to fish with lures.
Was thinking the surf rod would be good for casting the baits out but not ideal for using lures. Also thinking the reel is good for lures. So probably looking at buying a rod for lure fishing and a reel for the surf rod. Any recommendations? Budget approx $300.
Thanks for any help

I am not sure that the big rod would be used a lot up at Exmouth
you would maybe be well suited to get something about the 8 to 10 ft mark with plenty of grunt. Maybe one of the Xzogas, and if they are too expensive for the budget a nice Rovex Big Boss would come into consideration.
Reel wise there are so many choices. I would go for something in the 4000 to 6000 size in any of the decent brands. Once again, it will depend on what you can fit into your budget.
At least with the sales on you may be able to squeeze in something with a bit of quality.

I'm with Col
10' xzoga mastery - I bought one for not only soaking baits here, but for l/b exmouth next year. I think it will fit the bill perfectly

Lemax Rods
I (my wife) bought a 9" Lemax graphite Grand Tournament down at Oceanside a while back and it is the perfect rod for throwing lures and poppers after decent size targets. It has great pulling power and is as light as.. Unfortunatly it doesn't get used as much as I would like as lighter gear suits metro conditions. I matched it up with an Okuma EFS60 reel that has a 6:1 retrieve ratio, great for popping. Great balance also. The rod is rated at between 20 and 50lb line so it's no sucker for something decent.
My back wont allow me to use a 15" beast like you have. My limit is a UglyStiK Platinum 12" with a Mitchell Orca 80S Pro reel. The reel is getting on a bit now but I can still get parts for it and it will handle anything. These two units get me through any situation where heavier land based gear is required.
