Rod length advise
Submitted by GGs on Tue, 2016-07-12 15:00
Hi all
Im in the market for a new spin rod and just chasing some advise/opinions on length.
The two rods im currently looking at are the Yamaga Blanks Early Plus 88ml (8"8', lure 7-28g) and the 92xml (9"2', lure weight 7-32g).
It will primarily be used for tailor, salmon, bonito both off the stone and beach. Will also use it up north on the flats.
Will be paired with a twinpower SW 4000xg and PE1.5
Im leaning more towards to 88ml because its a little shorter so will be easier to handle fish solo from the stones but not having used a light spin rod over 7" im after advise from those who have.
Cheers

amia
Cheers mate. The 9ft amias do look nice but they're a little heavy for what im after. Ive heard they cast a mile with the micro guides though.

9 footer
The 9 footer will match up better with the 4000 twinpower I reckon.
I have a 4000 Sustain on my 9ft Tairyo Nanospeed Power and it is a great combo for throwing lures off the beach and the stones.
I also have an 8"6' Daiwa Gen Black Shorehunter and an 8"6' Storm Shore-X (not sold on the Shore-X yet) but I have them matched up with a one of the new 3000 stradics which feels nicely balanced.

I agree with your reasoning
I agree with your reasoning about the shorter rod being easier to land fish solo off the stones. Haven't used those rods but I've heard they're decent. I guess it depends whether you do more of your fishing off the stones or more off the beach. I do similar fishing to you and use a 7ft6 nitro magnum butt off the stones. And I've got a sensor surf 10ft for the beach. Personally I won't go less than 10ft off the beach now as I find I need the extra length to cast the distance.
If you really want to purchase just one rod for both purposes and not have a designated beach and designated rock fishing rod , then I'd look at my fishing over the last 12 months and if I do more beach fishing get the longer one and if more rock fishing get the shorter one. Hope it helps you make a decision!

I have a 7ft PE2 setup that is my current go-to for fishing the rocks but the blank is a bit to stiff for throwing the lighter lures.
I would probably do more fishing off rocks and when fishing the beach its usually hunting the reefs so the shorter rod would probably suffice for that.
Only issue is the 4000sw might be on the larger size for the shorter rod. Decisions decisions...

Check out the Azusa 862, had one a while ago, sold it and upgraded to a $600 battler shore hunter. Just sold the shore hunter (found it a bit to stiff for me ) and got another Azusa. I use an 08 Stella 4k for high speed spin and a branzino 3000 for slower lures. For under $350 they are an awesome rod. Have a though about using PE 1.5, its very thin when throwing heavier lures and cuts the fingers. I use PE2 and even PE 2.5.

Cheers mate. The Azusa 862 is a nice looking rod, may have to look further into them.
The heaviest lures i would be throwing with this setup would be around the 15-20g range so that was my reasoning for running PE1.5. I have a 7' PE2 and a 7'7" PE3 setup for the heavier lures.
In saying that the difference in diameter between quality PE1.5 - 2 nowadays is minimal so PE2 may be a bit nicer on the fingers.

for $350
you could get a custom built rod that is built on the backbone and dosen't have fast set epoxy on the guides that cracks when you look at it!!
