Rod storage positions in dinghy
Submitted by beejay on Fri, 2010-03-12 10:57
So i've just got myself a 4m dinghy and am going throught he process of fitting it out.
I am after ideas of where to place rod holders for storage of rods when on the move. I have seen the recent photo's of Milsies dinghy refit where he has them accross the bow and others that have them in similar areas but looking through the forrest of rods when on the move doesn't appeal to me (although that may be the only place for them).
Do you small boat crews just place them in the standard trolling holders etc or store them elsewhere in purpose built spots. Ideas?

The way we saw it was yes
The way we saw it was yes it’s not ideal but if they don’t get damaged then so what, sometimes we take 7-8 rods out and it was the only way we could fit them without having them in the middle of the boat which is a pain when you’re standing up fishing and you lose your balance and fall onto your rods, when there all up the front and out the back there is no way to fall on them, it’s not actually as bad as we thought either, you don’t really notice them and if we only take out 2 or three then we put them in the stern and side holders. the other option we weighed up was to get a rocket launcher from Whitworths and mount it at the stern, but in the end we just thought it would get in the way when fishing, another option is to have horizontal mounts that run along you gunwale but again we thought we would constantly be bumping and damaging the rods and reels. If you want any more info send us a PM

Thanks Milsey
I appreciate that in a small boat there is only so many places to put them. Most of the other dinghy's i've seen have a similar setup so it will probably be the way I go.
I'll send a PM also.

at stern
i din't want my reels smashing together etc when i tonk out in chop or getting excessively soaked in teh outwards facing rod holders.
i screwed 5 tubes to a piece of ply and mounted against teh stern on teh starboard side inside. it doesn't get in teh way of my second fuel tank or bait esky or whatever is behind my seat and as it sits directly behind my lazy ass i can block most of the spray. 8 setups in my 3.85 is not possible but i can realistically store 4 rods and fish at the same time. used alum rivets to attach tube 'board' to hull. anyone else with ideas or photos i'd also be interested to see.

some where I have a picture
some where I have a picture of a rubber duck that had a small rocket launcher mounted over the motor at the back.
It was perfect for holding rods out of the way, trolling and had a small bait board hanging off to one side. The idea could be easily adapted to a tinnie.
Think about where you fish the most on your tinny and the areas you seldom fish over, like the motor and front bow. Then see what you can do.
just an idea to play with. I will try and find that pic and put it up.
cheers
Tony

not a great picture, but
not a great picture, but you'd get the idea:

allows you to troll with rods laying flat on top and still put another two rods for storage on each-side.
search through the South African sites where guys use inflatable ribs for beach launching and fishing. some good ideas that can modified to suit a tinny
Good luck

as they say, where there is a will, there is a way...
this girl has solved her issue of too many rods and too small a tub...lol
here is the link to the tube designers, again think outside the box and take tips from people like this with tight space restraints.

i was thinking along the
i was thinking along the same lines as Tony but one thing you could look at is some bar work at the front with the rocket launches mounted on that. with that method you would keep the rods up out of your line of sight and not adding the weight to the back of the tinnie.

Tubebabe
Thanks for the photo's Tony. I must admit I was a bit taken back by the immense size of tubebabes craft but after getting over the shock and then looking at the photo's of hers and the other craft you can see how they have used almost every square centimetre of available space.
Definately food for thought.
F.F. I played around with that sort of idea over the weekend and seeing as I already have bow rails on the boat That will probably end up being how I do it.
Thanks all
