Boat Trailer tyre pressures

Hi all

Bloody confused now and thought I would post the question.

I have a single axle Dunbier trailer for a traily 5.4 centre cab.

Trying to make sure the pressures are OK on the tyres. Sometimes they look flat but the pressures are OK from a car perspective.

Now I have heard conflicting stories about what the pressures in a trailer should be and I dont know who to believe.

Currently at 36PSI.

Cheers

Neels

Check the tyre max pres

Check the tyre max pres rating. Failing that ring your local tyre outlet and quote the tyre and get the good oil.

Fri, 2010-03-19 18:24

wouldn't the tyre pressures vary when towing a 5m ali quinnie compared to a 5m f'glass boat because of the weight difference?   just to confuse us even more?

Access to Air

Fri, 2010-03-19 18:49

Not wanting to hijack this thread but has anyone found an easy accessible air hose outlet for your boat trailer at a service station.  Most in my area seem to be tucked away in a remote corner somewhere.  I live in North Perth.

Wrt tyre pressures ................ don't know.  Waiting to hear from the experts.

I run my tyre pressure lower

Fri, 2010-03-19 21:08

I run my tyre pressure lower than the recommended when I'm only towing my boat from home to the local ramp, a couple of km's. This means I don't get too much bounch. On a long journey I tend to pump them up to the correct pressure, but also use tie downs. I had a situations a few years back where a car out of control caused me to swerve going up on the curb which in turn caused the trailer to bounce the boat off the rollers because of excess tyre pressure, (And an idiot Hoon!). My boat is an Ali, but I imagine a glass boat wouldn't bounce as much.

If they are LT tyres go

Sat, 2010-03-20 09:06

If they are LT tyres go 45-50lb, or whatever it says on the side. With my tandem if I leave them lower than that I run more risk of snapping a wheel off when twisting it to park. Sames goes when turning through a culdesac.

It would be great to be able to lift  an axle off the ground when parking it up, but then the other axle would need to be rated to 2t. I have a big fear of losing a wheel, after doing one on my mowing trailer and costing me a days work. The runaway wheel just missed a $150k Mercedes too.

tyre placard

check on the side wall for the tyre ratings , it would be better to have light truck tyres fitted and the pressure ratings will be stamped on the side wall , my rig around town i run at 45 to 50 PSI and on a long trip with extra gear in the boat i run them at 55 to 60 with the maximum rating being 65 psi but you should allow for heat exspansion .

I run dual wheels on a 610 traily , with the single theres no load sharing over two axles so i would have a good look at the type of tyres you have fitted and make sure there LTs
