rods position when underway

Hey guys, any constructive comments appreciated:

I will be undertaking an 800km trip with the boat undertow.  Because (on a previous trip) I had two rods suffer amputation of the tips by whatever rolling onto them in the trialer I intend, this time, to traqvel with the rods erecr in the rod holders ( at stern of boat).

Now, as I do not see many rigs towed over long distance with the rods erect like this I must wonder "what am I missing?".  The only negative I can think of is a stray bird missile damaging the rods but I would appreciate any other points that I have not considered.

Thanks!

Why not get a length of large

Why not get a length of large diameter PVC pipe and stick the rods into that?

I've got one of these

I've got one of these http://www.swlab.com.au/rod-holders.html

$100 very well spent. I manage to get 9 rods into it and I never feel my rods are going to get damaged in transit.

I use the el cheapo jarvis

Sat, 2014-03-22 21:52

I use the el cheapo jarvis walker rod bags from kmart. Protects rods from scratches and potential damage. Maybe use the bags and the aforementioned pvc pipe to be certain?

I lay a sleeping bag down on the deck and another on top push in between the rods having the in holders may put a fair bit of stress on the rod due to the wind an hi speeds hope this helps

Too easy to get a rod knocked off from a rod holder at a fuel stop.  I'd also be concerned gravel rash could damage a blank or a guide.

I also do the PVC tube/rod tube thing and put the better rods in rod socks before putting them in the tube and bind them together with rod wraps.

I use PVC

Sat, 2014-03-22 22:03

I think a piece of pvc is about the best with a rug or similar separating the rods so no damage occurs from vibration. A cheap and hard cover protection.

As the boys said bit of pvc

Sun, 2014-03-23 00:26

As the boys said bit of pvc from Bunnings a couple of screw on caps (about $20- 25) wrap each rod in a towel or old bed sheet store either on the deck or in the cabin and they will be in one piece when you arrive and return home never leave them in your rod holders unless your on the water

Old quilt for me, one rod in

Sun, 2014-03-23 06:18

Old quilt for me, one rod in and roll it so some quilt between each rod and keep rolling, bit of cord around the lot to keep it bundled and lay it in the boat where nothing else is going to move/fall/bounce on top of the rods and you'll be right (I put mine up the front on the bunks and everything else (apart from some bedding)on the cockpit floor that way nothing will end up on the rods).

Definitely not in rod holders for that distance (birds/ trees/servo roofs etc).

Cheers

Generally the steering area

Mon, 2014-03-24 16:16

Generally the steering area of a boat, I probably should have said Deck (or fishing area) but in most trailerboats the cockpit floor is the same as the deck, bar on larger boats which may have the cockpit raised from the fishing deck.

Originates from the fact the lookout on old sailing ships used to be called a cock.

A quick google search may have prevented you from looking like a C___ :-)

I believe that now more

I believe that now more females are entering the merchant marine, the term "cockpit" has been replaced with "box office"

The reason why they call the pilot section of an aircraft a cockpit is that if it was called the C%^tpit they would fall straight through.

Thank you all for the input and reasoning.

I will wrap and place in pvc piping form now on.

Cheap cloth rod bag and a rod

Mon, 2014-03-24 10:22

Cheap cloth rod bag and a rod tube made from 100mm PVC DWV pipe and fittings.
That's the way I have always transported my rods, and after dozens of trips none have suffered any transit damage.

Together

Tue, 2014-03-25 10:58

all I do is tape them all together and roll them up in a blanket or doona and lay them on the deck.

Leaving them sticking up in a rod holder is asking for them to get pinched or being hit by a bird while travelling.
