Rotto Kingies save the day
The weather had been atrocious during the last few weeks with zero opportunity to get out on the weekends. Finally there was a glimmer of hope as the heavens cleared and the winds dropped providing a rare window to get out and do some fishing. I called up my fishing mate Glen on the Wednesday and he confirmed that he was good to go for the weekend. Come Friday and the boat was prepped, bait purchased and the rigs tied - all ready to go. Glen called me late on Friday to say that his son had popped in for a surprise visit from the navy and he was therefore unable to join me - bummer. Well, there was no time to organise another partner to join me and the missus already had plans for the Saturday, so it was going to have to be a solo session.
I launched at sunrise and headed straight to Rottnest Island targeting one of my favourite bommies where I had decent success with snapper in the past. The ride was pretty bumpy as the remnants of the previous evening’s wind was still making its presence felt. An hour later I finally reached my destination and after anchoring introduced a fair amount of burley to the swim. I scratched around for a good five hours catching undersized fish apart from a blackarse which I pulled up from the bottom with the KP (more stories to come about the KP). After much frustration I eventually decided to pull the pin and as I was heading back around the West end of Rotto I spotted an angler involved in a decent tug with a fish. I cut the motor and watched him land a fair sized YTK. I could not go home empty handed and decided to give it a bash myself - all whilst maintaining a fair distance from the other boat. After dropping some burley into the swim the YTK made their appearance and soon had heaps of them around my boat with me literally hooking a fish on every cast - not necessarily landing them though. In little less than an hour I managed to land eight YTK, the largest being a solid 90cm fish. Feeling much happier about the outcome for the day I headed back to the boat ramp before the winds once again churned up the ocean.
