RST Training
Hi All,
I am looking to purchase my own boat soon and need to get my RST ticket.
I was looking at the variety of Trainers and courses available and Bob Slight boat school offered a number of courses.
2 day course - Recreational Skill
3 day course - Sea Skill
My old man has his own boat and I've been boating for awhile but never taken the boat out myself, so as for rules regulations and stuff go im pretty inexperienced.
The 3 day course is what im interested in, as one of the training modules is "reef identification" im assuming this is where to identify reefy areas, danger zones etc.
Do you guys think its worthwhile paying 70 bucks more just for that? or paying for the normal training and ask them during the training excercise.
Anyone recommendation on any other training courses? or RST providers?

My opinion:
The RST is a VERY BASIC assessment of your boating knowledge and 'skills'. Only time on the water will give you experience and that should never stop.
Rules and regulations is one thing, they can be learned pretty quickly, but seamenship (your ability on the water, how to read the sea, sub surface structures, conditions and how to respond accordingly and the decisions you make etc) is something else altogether.
Being a deckie on your father's boat is a good start (better than not being out in one) , but no subsitute for being the skipper at the helm. In that situation, awareness and confidence are key factors - and that only comes from experience.
Not sure in Perth, but the RST practical test down here is over fairly limited time and, on the day, I think it's best to concentrate on just what's required (taking into account your duty of awareness and safety of course) rather than 'clutter' your mind with all sorts of other questions and issues.
Ask yourself carefully, how experienced YOU feel on both skill sets.
It could well be money well spent - especially valuable insites from an experienced skipper.

I passed
which proves a well trained Beagle could get through - i think $70 for a longer course than the $165 one day course i did is a steal - unless reef identification consists of ploughing into one full tilt and having the instructor say " This is a reef ". I would like to do a full boat skills course and will do so when the opportunity presents. Good luck.

can't remember the trainers name - he works at Challenger TAFE. Very good, very thorough and made no bones he would fail you if required.

I did mine a month ago
Through a guy with Challenger Tafe called John Adams - $170. He was very good - knew his stuff, enjoyed a laugh but was quite serious about it all.
Did the theory at his place during the week (Tues) and the practical on the weekend (Sat) at Claisebrook Cove. We had one guy fail the practical as he was unable to "log on". But, its not difficult, so don't get all worried about it - but it is very basic - a more invloved course would probably be better.
