Rust Converters & Paint
Submitted by the_dude84 on Fri, 2011-10-14 00:16
I have decided to refurbish my boat trailer and my old man told me to spray it all with rust converter before painting it. Does anyone have advice on a good rust converter and where to get it? Also what type of paint should i use? (I've never done this before) Any advice would be appreciated. Also changing the springs and axle as well.

Killrust Hammertone Finish
Done my tinny and camper trailer with this gear a few months ago...I think its a Whiteknight brand... I just sanded and wire brushed any flaky stuff off and applied with a brush all done in a couple of hours...come up good...the hammer finish hides blemishes and sets real hard ...I got away with a litre around 25/30 bucks and thinned it down a smidgen ...anyway thats what I used...

getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

Paint, I used a brew supplied
Paint, I used a brew supplied by "Phoenix Paints" , they make it and its a water based paint used for protecting steel surfaces for industry, including marine.
Includes a rust converter.
They give instructions on how to apply it, and also supply according to your needs.
The company is at unit 1, 79 Forsyth street, O'Conner.
web site WWW.phoenixpaints.com.au
Now I cant say how my trailer will look in 5 years time, but so far its holding out OK.
I have more info if required.
PS they are next door to trailer parts O'Conner just for convienience.

I used the phoenix product an
I used the phoenix product an a lot of projects, and used western galvanisers as well. The phoenix product was verry good, so much that I used it on my own boat trailers, and after 8 years on one trailer, and 6 years on the other, they are still in exclent condition. Mind you, they get a good wash after each use. I also used it on the reef picks we made up, cheeper than gal, and it is holding up well.

If you've got the trailer
If you've got the trailer apart and the boat off why not get it blasted and primed with zinc. Or get it hot dipped galv. Do it once do it right.
