Salmon

Can any one fish a DFZ zone ? apart from commercial fishing or related activity, is that correct ?

Any one care to share some tips on catching the Salmon, what time of the year do they start running, how hard or easy it is going to be to land one.

whats best, live, Lure's, Mulie's, I spose they will take all

I my self would like to drive South this year to get a few, release a few over all have a good time.

They should start running

They should start running from now towards Easter coming closer north as the time passes. As to whether it's easy to land one, I only tried it for one season down at Pt Peron. First time and it was good though the next day we went was a bit quiet.

I haven't actually have the chance to stumble upon a huge school of of them swimming around. Was just casting around reefs hoping to strike one. Oh and I was using the ol' mulies on gangs. Was using a light bream rod with 4/6lb braid too, first hook up got too excited and it snapped. The next few I played them slowly and still managed to land them and was great fun. My mate was using a beach rod and still had fun bringing them in too though I reckon mine was more fun. :P

As for lures, people use twisties too though I haven't had much luck with them. I guess it works much better in breaks and when you actually get the chance to cast into a school of them swimming around.

I guess it's always better

I guess it's always better down there early as the school moves up. I forgot to mention that when I went to Pt Peron it was winter, so pretty much just a few leftover salmons. I must admit they are the best shore based fish to target now with light gear, though I haven't have my hands on the mullas and giant tailors. :P

Hey Karl...

...will be planning some day trips to Dunsborough from late March right through April...I generally go during the week so less crowds, and you're welcome to join me when the time comes. In fact, anyone else on here that may be interested is also welcome! The only thing that will stop me is if we get some really good Fads weather!

The Eagle Bay/Meelup/Castle Rock areas are really good for light tackle fishing and last year had lots of fun with softies, bibbed minnows, and poppers.

If you get on a school

If you get on a school they'll eat allmost any thing cause they're all fighting for a feed, twisty's and metal slugs have worked best for me when on a school they last longer than the plastics, you just have to match the hatch for that day and wind conditions

I agree

Metals work great when action is on. I use poppers also with good results at times and great fun.

I see some talk here of light tackle for a Salmon run. FORGET IT! a 12 foot stick with a solid reel and 9 kilo line. Anything lighter in the surf and you end up leaving a heap of Generation "Y" salmon with metal ornaments hanging off their faces. Not to mention the yards of line they have to drag around after they have snapped you off.

Cheers, Vince

Heh Vince, I was picking off

Wed, 2009-02-11 18:16

Heh Vince, I was picking off the leftovers though and I play them slow so I managed to land them except for the very first one. But of course if I'm actually lucky enough to see a school, it'd be a different story. :P

Hi Ya, I agree with

Hi Ya,

I agree with Vince.  If you want some fun simply wind the drag off a bit.  I have not been successful with poppers but the metals with a single hook worked brilliantly.

Cheers.
