Salmon Report @ Cape Nat

Dropped the tub in at Quindalup yesterday lunchtime and decided to have a look down at Bunkers for some Salmon. Was buzzed by two choppers at the ramp so thought the Pro's were looking which could be a good sign. Off we went, conditions weren't too bad just a moderate SE wind so it was good to get out of the house and get the tub out. We were 10 minutes out and spotted birds working , over goes Rogers favourite Yozi lure , bang straight onto a Bonito which was a bit of fun for him,  kept steaming down to Bunkers , good signs of bait fish on the sounder. Got closer to Bunkers, so over with the lures,  did a couple of passes around Rocky Point and then headed out to the Cape. Still nothing after an hour or so , wind was on the make so we decided to go right into Bunkers and catch a feed of Herring/Whiting and relax for a couple of hours. Got a good feed of sand whiting and some good sized Herring also which was good. Wind started to drop off a bit so we decided to head around the Cape and see if we could get a salmon or two! Over with the lures again, trolling for about 10 minutes and Rogers on again (Good sized Pike). Still sloppy as  around there so didnt expect too much. Trolled for another 15 minutes and then I got a hit on mine and this thing took off, peeling the line off pretty quick and then  spat it (not happy). That was a bummer losing that!Turned around and headed back to Bunkers again, ( Roger got another Bonito just inside the Cape) and that was it for the day, headed back to the ramp. Hopefully they will come on soon before I go back to work! Sorry about no photos , forgot to take the camera!    cheers  nev!

Choppers

Fri, 2010-03-26 13:22

Be a first for the pro's to use a chopper. They used a spotter plane about twenty years back and to my knowledge nothing since then.Just sit snd wait with some crews travelling between beaches.

Spoke to a pro mate the other day and he's not even doing it this year because there is no market for them as cray bait because of pot and working days restriction on crayfishermen. He's been salmon fishing every year for the lasy 40 odd years and this is the first where they are not even looking for them.

If the weather had been better its always worth a look on Wright's bank, most boats trolling always keep in close and neglect to try the bank.

There were plently of tuna

Fri, 2010-03-26 18:33

There were plently of tuna out from canal rocks/smiths beach when I was down there on sunday/monday. Resonable size too. Saw a few boaties get some around 6-8kg, and also saw some jumping that would have easily been 10kg + . They were all just out of bloody casting range though. Didn't see any salmon, neither did the boats. Personally I'd rather have tuna anyway haha.

You're a little hopeful

You're a little hopeful there, the state record is under 10kg. A 10kg salmon is like lassiter's reef.

I think Daniel's comment were in reference to the size of the tuna not the salmon.

Ahh I missed the subject,

Ahh I missed the subject, its a bit of an annoying non-feature really unless you start the thread.

IIRC the Aus record for Salmon is just 9.4kg too.

While down at Peaceful Bay two weeks ago I was told there was only one salmon camp working this year, certainly Peaceful Bay wasn't.   But they may have been talking about just the great southern (cheynes, betty's beach, parry's, peaceful, nornalup and windy harbour).    I was later told Cheynes Beach caught around 60 tonnes the night before, so assumedly they're the one.

Salmon teams

Sat, 2010-03-27 09:17

Windy harbour is Allen Miles team's beach and on the west coast its shared by John Farrell,Nicky and Anthony Lucas,Shane Miles and Michael and Peter Soulos on a first on the beach first shot at the fish basis.

They usually fish the west coast on the early/ up run part of the season then switch to the Geographe bay side of the cape on the back run.

No Netting in Geo Bay

Sat, 2010-03-27 09:50

I believe there is a total net ban in the bay now. The pros have to keep to the west coast. Should save a lot of arguements between the pros and recs.
