Submitted by max199 on Sat, 2008-02-09 19:43
Hey everyone, was going to go down south to a spot I found last year for a Salmon hunt. Just wondering if anybody has heard of fish schools going by close to shore(LB'sd) near Dunno yet?

I always go down to Indjinup & Wydup end of Feb, a good time period to start. The commercial guy at Margaret River has been seeing small pods of fish inclose of late....thats about it.....early early still!

Might go and have a float through Bunkers Bay and towards Cape Natto during the week and see what's about if the wind is kind to us.

Cheers everyone, great info and it looks like there will some competition at some spots. Me also love Wydup bay Ryan, great viewing spot up top and awsome stretch of beach. Can go for a dip to cool off as well! BONUS....

There's been a few different reports
I have read reportsthat there are some really big schools and other reports that there hasn't been too many seen yet. Two of those reports were from the same area.
As long as they make it Smiths Beach by mid-March I will be happy.

yup
hey colin smiths beach is ok but they are way better spots to hit the schools.. for game fishing.. smiths is nice in winter when the gutters get good, a few bundies and tailor,a cple big mulloway and some bronze whalers make a great night ... haha if u want some tips bro hit me up for the salmon,i think next yr the schools r gonna be massive around the bay as the pros have been banned from netting.. me n mrs got in western angler in 98 for catching salmon 4 page spread .. pretty stoked memory.. they have to be one one the best temperate spieces to game fish..

Hi Harro
Thanks for the heads up matey. Love to chase some big schools if you can make some suggestions. I chose Smiths as I know that there can be samlon there and I needed to find a place to stay which was going to make the Mrs happy.
I would really appreciate some good tips if you can help out as I am gearing myself up for a good salmon assault thi year.

they'r coming
hey guys ..letting you know salmon are making they first runs up the cape, at the moment they are being caught around moses rock, boats and beach, probably honeycombs beach is the go for the landbased and anywhere from moses down for boaties, also locals are getting spaniards out on natos reefs and coral lumps, water temp has been around 23 degrees, and trolling boats are getting them easy, word is that billfish poked there heads out at three bears, spooted by a number of boaties and surfers.. woohoooooooo..don,t know how long the temp is gonna be up there but bring it on.. i,m out there

bears track
hey crew.. no the old yallingup track is closed has been for some time but you can easily get there from hemsley road/yallingup or sugarloaf rock rd, but the billies are out a c ple hundred metres past the break this area is always pretty good for tuna and there are quite a few whitey siting there also.. i know a cple pple that a had a white swim right under them, they thought it was a sub haha, but shit themselves.. but if ur a boatie bro then just cruise around the cape, salmon season around here gets pretty exciting, last yr we caught yellow tail kings from fish rock in old dunsborough, also yellowfin tuna were caught and lots of good sized sharks,, bring it on i say..

Few to try
yo wicksey, well bro atm they are catching them down around moses rock ,no reports of smiths beach and wyadup(injidup) beach yet,but until they get hot around my end of the cape,if you want them then i would suggest hamelian bay,i would say about 2-3 weeks things will be hotting up ,and as soon as they do i,ll let you guys know..
if hamelian bay is too far i would still try injidup beach down of wyadup road, easy parking walk down the steps and ur there.. this beach is also good late evening and night,if you find a good gutter ,then i,m sure you,ll be into large tailor and mulloway,i have had many nights down there.. another great beach to hit which is a fav is windmills beach, awesome spot ,big tailor and one of my personal fav salmon spots, there is a rocky cove that the salmon usually school up in and you can have lots of fun with poppers, the beach is deffinately good for salmon, tailor and mulloway..once again look for the gutters, for the salmon the northern end of most of these beachs usually works best.. good luck

hey colin mate.. windmills beach is up near the lighthouse, you go up towards bunker bay, instead of turning off towards the resort or the beach cafe, you keep going up towards the lighthouse,on the left hand side you will see a gravel track, this is only 2 wd,a bit corrugated but still harmless, you can,t miss it because if u do u,ll be at cape nat lighthouse..when you turn down this track just follow it mate all the way, you,ll see a main turn to the left(the only one) take it and follow down there is a nice lookout now, where looking south gives u a good view of windmills break and the awesome beach easy walk track,, cple hundred metres,as you look left or south you,ll see a big rocky crop and you,ll be able to see the water in between the rocks thats an awesome spot for salmon.. we have caught and release over 20+ in a cple hrs there..from the carpark you,ll see the track leading you down to a beach.. awesome fishing for more than salmon.. (i,ll probably get shot for this haha) if you follow the track and don,t turn down to windmills you end up at "other side of the moon" a surf break ,you,ll see the tip of cape nat there, one friend of mine caught a 27kg ytk there not so long ago.. but also great beach fishing, bit of a walk though..i prefer windmills,, have pulled some monstrer salmon/tailor and mulloway there over the yrs.. good luck bro

guys if ur landbased and the salmon arrive before you do then another great spot is bunkers beach, down the southern end of the beach near rocky point is where they school up,this lil spot is called the hospital,, everyone gets salmon there.. i usually go there with the boat when the swell is low.. rocky point eagle bay and bunkers have the lowest water temp and the schools swim up n down once they get around the cape.we caught a cple 10kg monsters there last yr,for landbase u can walk the beach from the cafe/farm break lane or do the track from eagle bay(longer)

Hints and tips are cool with
Hints and tips are cool with general location reports but telling people where to cast with pinpoint directions on how to get there, is a bit much. (sorry harro) Im a bit sour cause one of those spots is my favourite and no one likes fishing with crowds. Maybe im over reacting. I know none of those spots are secret but still..
This site is way cool.

secrets
bro like anyone on this site or wherever i don,t think pple give away the secret spots,i remember when i fished down here one night and landed a full bag of 2-3kg tailor and then got 5 mulloway landbased i told a friend of mine that runs a local fishin shop and the next week friday it was in the west australian, did my head in coz we went back to the same gutter and there was like 30 pple on it.....i know some things r best unsaid...
but i,m only trying to help pple..landbased fishing especially requires some expertise in fishing for diff fish,so i hope everyone respects the things i say but i never will do anyones secret spots as i have a few of my own..peace

bit full on that some stray salmo have hit perth already.. i know that that once they pass cap natntey get lost they do a full loop of geographe bay only because they get lost no other reason as the schools head for west of rotto..no schools have hit capenat yet but the water temp is up at 23 -24 which is very bizzare but it explains all the mackeral and billfish caught ... salmon will not come in close if the water is that warm.. but the last cple yrs have changed alot..atm our capes r abundant with huge tuna from southern bluefin to yellowfin and mackeral.. who knows.. follow the temps on ur sounders thats wots goin on atm...

Personally showing people
Personally showing people spots and fishing with them is cool I reckon (not that it matters what I think! just my opinion:)), its just the info on the net. It's there for all to see and its there in black and white forever.
Sounds like youve got some top fish there Harro. I didnt mean anything personal, If i didnt know where those spots where Id be stoked with all that info! I just found em the hard way thats all. Good old exploring!
Cant wait to get into the salmon. Love the feeling of spotting your first school for the season, then bolting after em. Yeew
Most dudes know this site but someone might find this useful for water temps, have a flick thru the date index for previous years and see what ya reckon. You can really see the cape to cape current roaring in some months

Well I've had the boat hooked up to the car for a cuppla weeks now but when my days off come around then so does this bloody easterly. Where abouts are you Harro? In Busso or down the track a little? And the water was a little cooler down here for this time of the year last year too, so hopefully it doesn't warm up to much.

Dale
the weather may be different from last week, but based on our experience last week, I'd advise putting in at the boat launch at Canal Rocks just down from Smith's beach.
might be worth looking out over the water at Sugarloaf or CR to see if you can see any schools.

G'day Eddie, I only put in
G'day Eddie, I only put in at Canal if I've got an experienced person with me, too many variables down there to worry about when launching and retrieving. But dont get me wrong, I love fishing out from there. Didn't manage to get out today though, knocked my knee and it swelled up to much to walk on, so I had it drained and gonna try again tomorrow, but out from Port geo. Join the crowd.
Cheers

a small school was swimming around rocky the other day, cple taken on lures but not really interested in mulies.. we r thinking these were resident salmon, those heading down i,d be looking south end of bunkers and around rocky,s,tuna being caught west coast, and still mackies and dhue,s out deep... we are heading out sunday probably west, but the swell is gonna be huge so canals won,t be an option, the ramp doesnt like the surge of swells, good luck to every1 this weekend.. hit me up on radio ..

Even though I said I would stay clear from Dunno, I made an early morning run(left Perth at 0330). Went to a spot which was mentioned earlier in this thread and it was shite! Southerlies, even a drizzle for a moment. The sun was covered by cloud for alot of the time which made spotting schools really hard if not impossible. NO birds diving close anyway. Tried a couple of spots but no joy. To top it off I broke the tip off my Starlo stick. Have to wait to check the weather later this week for nextt weekend!

we hit Albany
We went down to Cosy corner and shelley beach west of Albany and not much happening, Pro's camping there and the ranger there said they haven't arrived, but was geting herring on gulp worms fishing for whiting...WTF, went to windy harbour on Sunday and nothing there but wind, even on salmon beach, so said stuff it and went and camped up on the warren river and did some 4wd tracks and got red fin perch on soft plastics...
Salmon next time maybe...
Hopefully all spelling corrected for the haters!!! Smile forfuxake

A bit disappointing
Hope they start moving up soon. I am heading down that way next week for four days.
Sorry to hear about your rod Sherb. I had a ferrule fall out of my Starlo Stick recently. What a pain.

most of you posibly already
most of you posibly already read this but to thoughs who havent good news for rec anglers
The south coast salmon season is underway with reports of around ten tonne caught at Dillon Bay last week. Nanarup beach fishermen took around ten tonne last weekend and Parry's fishermen have had a couple of similar sized runs. Dumpy Wheatcroft is president of the South Coast Licenced Fishermen's Association and says the season has opened quite well; fish size is good but price is poor at around 40 cents per kilo. The main market is Safcol in South Australia with fish being placed on ice and sent by road trains. There is also a small market for cray bait in WA. No processing takes place in WA any more as prices do not cover the costs. Dumpy says that because of the low price for salmon only around half the beaches will be fished this season.
half the beaches being fished is a good thumbs up !!
i heard theres going to be like a no pro ban over the easter break is that correct?

Salmon
Got home from my Windy harbour Salmon trip today empty handed of Salmon but caught a nice feed of plump Bull Herring. We saw a few large Salmon heads on the beach as we drove along this looked promising but it was'nt our day, maybe next time.
