The rule of thumb is a third of your line strength.

It gets complicated after that;

  • What knots do you use, and how good are they?
  • What is your line rated too?
  • Whats your rod rated too?
  • What can you handle?

crank it up until you can only just hold it and back it of one clickLaughingJust go as hard as your body will allow.Get a spare set of carbontex for when your ones wear out

Saltiga drag

As a rule that's how GT fishing goes, I think with the sambo's, they only pull as hard as you do.

spot on tony - crank it up

spot on tony - crank it up and try and snap something - I have learn't that I can hold full drag on a stella for 3 minutes - after that my grip starts to struggle. Is there any other reason you go sambo jigging other than to test gear/yourself? I put it in the same boat as GT popping - it is a fitness test not a relaxing day out

Sure, thats why I told the guy to fish 1/3rd of line strength, then work your way up from there.

Dunno allrounder, pretty

Dunno allrounder, pretty sure that he would have to get the tiara back from you!

Just a couple weeks back you were telling us how you needed to lean into a rod with your forarm to fish a rod to it's max ... while running 8lb?

LOL, thats a whopping 4kg?

So I get a few extra fish that other people miss through unconventional methods, I guess I'm just lucky!

That rod is for kgs

Thu, 2010-08-05 20:44

and snapper at the three mile while drinking bourbon and eating a kfc hot and spicey.LaughingDifferent tackle for different fish. You are comparing a single handed spin rod to a three kings jig rod.I fish the gear i use to the limit of its capability.Be it whiting or marlin.By the way it was not a shot at anyone.Anyone that has done enough fishing has foul hooked more than a few fish.

Cheap shot, but I'll pay it!! Should actually be more points for anything other than a mouth take, fish don't eat through their tails!!

Before you get into town and i will sort out some assist hooks for you. Most the guys that do it often bind ours up a bit different than the bought ones.If you dont want to carry a whole bag of jigs over you can borrow a few of mine they just sit around now as we only go after other species now.Might do sambos once every couple of years on the way past to other ground.
