Salting Mulies

Can someone please give me some info on tis topic?
i have been told that you can use regular pool salt and a sealable bucket, however i am unsure of the process and how long they will last once salted?
Any help would be much appreciated.

this one has been covered before, but quite some time ago.

i have done it a couple of times. i used a large flat containor layering the mulies. first a layer of newspaper then mulies and put a layer of salt over them. repeat this process until all mulies are done. not too sure how long the mulies would last tho. i used mine over a couple of weeks.

if you are going camping and have limited ice this is a good way to keep the bait

Salting Mulies

Sat, 2011-03-12 09:18

Salted mulies will not last much longer than regular mulies as they will rot regardless. What salting mulies does is remove some of the moisture and firms up the flesh at bit so it holds onto the hook a lot longer. Since its dry, it does not need to be re-freezed, just refrigerated or keep cool.

not too sure about that honsu. salt is natures purest and finest preservative. a pack of mulies will last about a day outside of the freezer mate. salted mulies will last a good few weeks at a minimum.

my old man used to walk around the salt trenches around shark bay, and has seen jumbo tailor and mullas that have swam into the trenches before they block them up, perfectly preserved, and that was weeks after the water had evaporated.

Use a bucket start with a heap of salt at the bottom then put a layer of mulie/layer of salt until full..More salt the better. Most important part is to drain the fluid from the bucket (makes good berley) as this will make the mulies rot.Drain it ever few days.If done properly they will last months..

Prefer to buy 15kg block of mulies now iqf. Stays frozen for a full weekend and just pull a dozen or so out to defrost while your fishing.

with all the hassle its probably a waste of time and money.  unless its impossible a gen coupled to 12v fridge/freezer or chest freezer is the go.  you can even hire deep cycle batteries these days none of this is that expensive to hire compared to what you will already be spending on a fishing trip

We used to buy them off the shelf at tackle stores in Albany. Haven't seen them up in Perth though. Does anyone stock them? My old man would just leave them on the boat until next time. They worked fine as bait, but we were only chasing the bread n butter boys back then.

when i fished trigg as a kid I was told by some old blokes I may as well buy my prawns in bulk and salt em. Did that, put them in a jar and they lasted me most of the winter, caught as many herring on them as on fresh ones.

Salted mulies

Sat, 2011-03-12 18:53

There was a mob selling salted/ preserved mulies years back, tried them a few times and like everyone else gave them up as a bad joke. They were like rubber [good] but had no oil left in them to attract fish. They closed down after a year or so because no one would buy them and went broke.

Like all salted products, you need to put them in a refridgerated brine for a few days to get the salt through the flesh before dry salting otherwise all the oil in them is lost, then do the layer of salt/ fish to dry them out.

I'm a big fan of salted mulies, as is my old man. Being in Tom price we can't but bait so I salt all the frozen mulies I bring back from the coast to save on freezer space when camping etc They work really well especially for 5-6 day trips. A lot of beach fishos down home salt them as well. Best trick is to use butchers salt(fine) and a cardboard box and just layer them in ... No paper needed as the box soaks up all the moisture.

thanks for all the replies, i will be doing a trip down south for 5 days in a couple of weeks and i have very limited space (Suzuki Sierra) so i've decided to give it a go, i've heard mixed reports but my mates old man swears by em. I remember the long life mulies that you could buy years ago and they worked really well for us all we did was pot em in a bucket of sea water to soften them up then dip em in fish oil.

Cheers Richo

Im a fan of salted mulies but i use pool salt that you buy in bulk that evaporated from salt lakes, when you want to use it just soak them in freshwater 30 mins before fishing, definitely not better then fresh mulies experimented with tailor schools.

Best Bait

Sat, 2011-03-12 22:19

I used to use brined Mulies( preferably IQF) years ago in Carnarvon on several  wetliners. I used to brine 40 kg + at a time  in half a 44 gallon drum, third full of sea water , 25 kg bag butchers salt mixed in well with a paddle /oar or something throw em in for 24 to 28 hours . Rip them out , dry off a bit and used to layer them into a decent esky. Lasted for the 3 or 4 days fishin out at Koks. Bloody good bait and they look like they just come out of the water, also they are like rubber. Never seen bought or processed ones yet that come close to it...... Cheers !

I posted the same question some time back.

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/salting-mulies

Experience!

It makes no difference to the bite contrary to what some says.

The bait sticks on a little longer.

Works best with a little extra on it, like Slam or oil.

Last a shit load longer (not on the hook - see above).

But best off all (and this goes for all mulies) con your local GP to give you some finger sock, used to treat injuries to your finger, Wrap the whole mulie in it (salted or not), hook it on whether gang, single or snell through the sock, and you will have some more bites/strickes etc.

Beats salting them, and beats ghost cotton!
