Sand flys

Well im off to Karratha in less than a month.

Plan is we have a dingy and my mates and i plan to stop on a island off dampia and sleep the night. He warned me about sand flys. Anyone got good tips to avoid them ??

I was told that they even get into sleeping nets

Hamiltons and vegemite

Fri, 2009-04-03 12:13

Spent a lot of time around Dampier and the sand flies aren't that bad.

Have found that the Hamiltons spray sunscreen for some reason stops them dead in their tracks, we used it extensively when fishing Byno Harbour NT where the sand flies are literally in clouds. Arms and legs looked more like had been covered in pepper with sandies stuck to the sunscreen but not a single irritation

I am also told that loading up on vitamin B acts as a repellant hence eating lots of vegemite is supposed to help heaps

Can even get the plus version with sunscreen in it, so just spray and your done.

Heard the smell doesnt put fish off as well, but you might need to check that.

Don't worry

i find you get to become immune to the bites. As a young bloke i worked on the survey of the Newman Ore pier at Hedland - up to your waist in sludge in the mangroves for weeks on end and it was sand fly city. After 2 weeks you didn't notice them and the scars from scratching yourself raw fade after a few years.

But Blank Cheque has the goods - teatree oil and Dettol works well.
