Saragosa 18000 - Surf Reel?

Gday all.
Im from SA and fish our far west coast every year for mullies and sharks. We're heading back again next Feb so im in the process of putting togther a new heavy surf spin combo.
The rod is more than likely gonna be another Wilson 5120. (Already have one in overhead and love em)
Im considering matching the 5120 to a Saragosa 18,000. 20kg of drag and a large line capacity can come in handy on our western coastline.
Im gonna spool it with 40lb mono.
Curious to hear if any of you guys are running the Saragosa or Spheros 18,000's as a surf reel and if so how do you find it.. and what rod do you have it matched to?
Cheers guys.

I find it excellent. Just dont like casting thick mono through a threadline reel so I am selling mine to go overhead. Caught some big fish. I could have bought a stella at the time but I didnt want to use a stella off the beach and the way I use it so I bought the gosa. I got it matched to a cheapie 12foot sistar crystal. I found this rod better than the uglysticks. Its my lucky rod.

I run a Spheros 14000(smaller spool than the 18000) on my 13ft 3pc with 50lb braid off the shore when going for Mulloway and Sharks off the beach, or Dhui's and Pinkies off the cliffs. I use a very long wind on leader though to reduce the chance of the braid busting on rocks/reef. Massive amounts of cranking power, great for when a stupid stingray takes your bait. Works great for lobing big baits out. Wouldn't win any casting comps, but hey thats why i also got two Emblem Pros for when i need the distance and spinning.

I use an 18000 Saragosa on the beach, got it on a Gary Howard LBG 9ft, found it great, did use it on 12ft aerowave composite aswell, just looking for another 12ft with a higher line/cast weight to use for sliding off the beach aswell. Running 500yds of 40lb power pro with a top shot of 40lb mono, cant fault it at all. Paul.

Surf
Good reels not text book surf reels but tough enough to do anything. Have you looked at the saltiga surfs they are around the same price and just as tough, lighter and feature a long cast spool. 20kg of drag isn't actually gonna be what you get especially on those rods mentioned(snap). Penn 850/950 would be a cheaper option and pretty ruggard

I used my gosa 18000 as a surf reel for sharks and rays. It does work well with bigger fish as it has a high drag. I replaced the drag washers for carbontex wachers as the original ones got sticky after bout 1 year. Its a strong reel and can take a beating as I'm a bit rough with my gear. And I never really had a problem apart of the drag washers. I cant remember the brand of the rod I used it with but it was a 13ft rod. All up if you like fishing with spinn reels on the beach i think its a good choise.

great reel.
hey budd,
Ive used the saragosa 18000 for about a year and a half now for beach fishing and it has done the job very nicely.
as allready mentioned it's not the best casting reel but still gets enough distance for what i need
The drag has gotten a little sticky over the last few months but im getting them replaced soon.
Ive matched it with a graphite 12ft penn accord and i run 20lb mono but i have also put 30lb braid on it and handled very nicely.
Overall its a great reel, very tuff and doesnt mind a little rough treatment.
