Saturday Fishing

Thu, 2005-10-27 13:33

I'd say you should get into some.. From the reports I've read from the various websites theres a lot of fishy action close to rotto at the moment..

I think were heading out Sunday.. Not sure where yet, have to have a look at the conditions..

Ocean Outlook Says:

Sat 29th   WSW 2m Swell         Winds = WNW 8-12kn   WNW 12-16kn   NW 8-12kn
Sun 30th   SW 2.5m Swell        Winds = NW 8-12 kn       W    16-20kn   SW 12-16kn

Still relatively variable at this stage.. Hopefully things change a little bit between now and then..

Weekend Fishing

Fri, 2005-10-28 08:29

Looks like our fishings done for the weekend.. Theres a slight possibility that we might get out, but at the moment theres a few engine drama's going to stop us from getting anywhere.. On the brightside, there may be an engine upgrade in the next couple of weeks to a 4 stroke 100-115 which would improve things significantly.

Damn Weather

Fri, 2005-10-28 09:55

Well to say the least I dont think that its a bad thing that your boats out of action for the weekend Adam. By the looks of the forecast its gone up the shit again so dont know how much fishing anyone will be able to do. Might still try early on sat as I think that is the best chance of some respite from the wind.

New engine hey, gotta love new toys but why did you decide on the four stroke. I am looking at upgrading mine next year sometime but am leaning more towards the injected two strokes so interested to hear your thoughts.

2 Strokes

Fri, 2005-10-28 11:26

Something to consider:

Just spoke to a guy from work who has a 01/02 135 mercury optimax on a 21ft alley.  I asked him how he thinks it goes on fuel. He said it takes 50 litres for a return trip to Rottnest cruising at 20 knots from Fremantle

Would be interested to get a comparison from anyone with a four stroke

Fuel Performance

Fri, 2005-10-28 11:51

The fuel economy is definately one of the high points of getting a 4 stroke.. Considering it costs us currently about $120 to get out to the first fad and back again with a little fuel to spare its time to weigh up how much we will start saving on a 4 stroke and weather that is worth paying the extra donero for..

Being nice and silent would be another feature..  Considering that the boat is an 18ft voyager with a 75 hp mercury, it is well under powered for its weight until it gets on a nice plane..  Definately needs something with a bit more juice..

I remember when we went out on brians seafarer which had a 115hp honda 4 stroke and we did 15 kms at 8-10 knots and it didn't even dent the fuel gauge..

Not too sure on the other features of 4 strokes, but definately something to look into..

fuel

Fri, 2005-10-28 16:32

always in it just the depth that varies

i agree there adam for the extra outlay on the 4 strokes and the current prices of fuel which i highly dout will get any cheaper .the addvantages of the 4 stroke out weigh the old technoligy of the 2 stroke by miles!!!!!!! except these new etec evenrudes. all the write ups i read on them they look like they could be a good thing!!!!! i.e same grunt as the old 2s . quiet as, . better emission exhaust control ,

when i was looking at motors the dealers i spoke to all trying to sell me a 4, had to ask about the etec all 3 dealers said they where a good thing .it was almost like they where trying to get rid of the 4s before they where old stock due to all the interest in the etecs, consecuss was a 75 etec would pull just as hard as a 90 4 stroke .same weight as a 2s as well .

 worth looking into ,

hey" andy " what are your thoughts mate . even though i know ,ha ha ha lol

well, today blowed some

Sat, 2005-10-29 13:19

well, today blowed some serious ass. In more than one way.

Winds where shit, swell wasnt too bad ,seas seemed a bit higher than i thought they would be. Very hard conditons to fish in today but managed to pull a small dhu, small black arse , very small pinky and a 45cm KG. Oh and a bit st baker+wrasse for bait.

So it looks like ocean reef is a bit of a juvinille fish hatchery at the moment.  No photos as there wasnt anything worth taking a pic of :P

2 strokes v 4strokes

Sat, 2005-10-29 14:09

guys,

im a marine mechanic  well apprentice

just on the 135 optimax  50L for a return run to rotto  my mate has a 28 foot fury centre console with a new 225 honda 4 stroke we use 60L for a return run.  For a 115 hp  no motor can beat the fuel economy of the 115 optimax  they are a direct injection 2 stroke.  if i was looking at a motor i would be going four stroke for the fuel and the resale value if you intent keeping it for a while, we see it now at work the majority of people want four strokes.  Adam your boat a 18ft voyager would go well with say a 90hp honda or 100hp yamaha dont think yamaha make a 90. they are definatly the leaders in 4 stroke technology.  suzuki and johnson which are the same motors i wouldnt touch over a honda or yamaha.  you would be using 50% less fuel than you 75 merc. they are pretty thursty .   No matter what any salesman tells you 4 strokes are the future.   A 4stroke will outperform an e-tec any day.
