Saturday Great white

Headed over to rotto with the boys for a dive on Saturday morning, and came across this big girl a couple km's short of Rotto. Not really what you want to see just before jumped in for a dive.

Was close too the whale carcass, we actually thought it was an upturned boat from a far.

She was big, guessing 4.5 - 5m

Was us on the news last night and tonight, and no not us who jumped on the whale. We did hear about this on the way back from rotto when we came up to the dead whale on the way back, there was a 2nd great white circling there about 3m.

To give it perspective, my boat is 8m long

yeah it was pretty amazing. But given the sheer size of it, you would never want to see one underwater.

Not the thing you want to see

Sun, 2014-11-02 20:40

Definitely not the thing you want to see when you are in a 3.5 tinny, but a great sight if you are in a bigger boat. How long did she hang around your boat.

We watched her for about 30

We watched her for about 30 minutes before we left, she just kept making passes at us and sliding underneath rubbing her dorsal fin on the hull.

 Nice photos, some lifetime

Sun, 2014-11-02 20:58

Nice photos, some lifetime memories there for sure. Wonder how much threat that would pose to you in a boat (especially a 4-5m boat)?

Did anybody else think channel 9's shark "expert " sounded a little biased? Maybe because she's in  with sea Sheppard and wasc.

Wonder if the boat looked

Mon, 2014-11-03 08:03

Wonder if the boat looked like the whale from underneath which could explain the interest in the boat.

I saw some of the footage from the news of your boat and also of the whale with the sharks around it. Very similar swimming patterns given that its gut was full and was probably protecting the next meal rather than actively feeding.

exactly what I was wondering,

Mon, 2014-11-03 08:17

exactly what I was wondering, was it just protecting its next meal?

I've never seen sharks attack eachother tho to protect their meal, especially something as big as that whale.
