Scorpion fish and other nasties

Heh guys,

Bit of a newbie to all this
Was out yesterday, good fun and managed a dhuie
Unfortunately mate on board got spiked by a scorpion fish, we weren't aware it was harmful. Looked nasty so we unhooked overside but he still got spiked !

I'd be grateful for future reference for info on the main critters that I may come across in the metro area that are potentially harmful and how to handle them and what to do if get hit.

Cheers

Joycey

if its spikey

Put it back carefully, cut off line if needs be. Grabbing bottom of jaw with hand can be the safest way to de- hook

Sharks and all toothy creatures another danger and Mako sharks have been known to lap into boats, but the one that can fool newbies is the north west blow fish.

It looks like a fine fish but it is poisonous to eat and has really sharp teeth that are like bolt cutters, often biting through hooks. If you have a hook bitten in half its time to move.

"Don't touch me fish"

I call them all "Dont toch me fish". If they look that way then dont touch em. There are many marine creatures that can give you a nasty sting but thankfully most of them advertise the fact. As above I use long nosed fishing pliers (readily available at your tackle shop) Its not worth spoiling your day out.

The new fisheries rule book

Sun, 2012-12-30 14:45

The new fisheries rule book has a listing of some poisonous fish in it, I remember cos I read it last night. I think basic first aid for them and stonefish etc is immerse in hot water and seek urgent medical aid. I'll try to find the PDF i read last night and post link here.

Latest 2012/2013 (new 01/02 rules) rec fisher rules, was studying last night. Does make a small mention about some of the venimous/stingy fish we have here. Good first aid book onboard would be more appropriate though.
