search button

 there is one.

Using it when interesded in a topic would save a lot of re-hashed threads and people will find better info and answers in questions that have already been answered fully, rather than asking the same thing every week, Then if you have more to add you can add to the existing one which in the long run will make for a better resource.

lots of threads looks great, but it makes for crap reading, and makes searching for good responses on topics harder later. I reckon the mods need to highlight this a bit more.Smile

Feel free to dissagree, this is only my opinion.

cheers russ

I'm not sure how I can make it more obvious, its there under the .com, its in the left hand column below your user details.

I don't think Matt meant anything by it Russ, just that it has been brought up many times to remind people.  All good.

Its definatly funny Till, and im not without a sense of humour and can take shit. Obviously someone was gunna do a search and come up with somthing, thats called one-up manship, and its pretty satisfying for about 30 seconds.

If were talkng about it again its great, the point i was trying to make was,

The mods should be more active with it to help keep the structure of the site,

Fishwrecked is the biggest online fishing resource in wa now, so the more structure and continuity the threads have, the better it will be in the future.

Wasnt going for one-ups

Wasnt going for one-ups manship but i guess when you post one word, it can be a little hard to get the exact point across right :p.

I dont disagree on the points, or the posting of the thread just to be clear.

lock threads

Wed, 2010-09-01 12:50

lock the thread. Then just a quick post saying something like "this has been cover before" and include a hyperlink of the search result using the topic title. I reckon that would get the message through Laughing

Agreed!

I think hlokk is agreeing with you too, Russ

My first point of reference is always the search and you are very right about the amount of duplicated threads diluting the quality of search results.

I'm on a number of different forums and it was the senior members, not just mods, who took the charge (harshly at times) in encouraging new users to use the Search function.

Just thought it was funny

Wed, 2010-09-01 12:48

Just thought it was funny that there was a previous topic on it Russ :p No mean intent or anything personal.

I was actually going to say that the problem is that threads drop back, so new members wont necessarily see the thread reminding them to search if it was posted a few weeks back, and unfortunately people who dont search wont look back for threads telling them to search....

But I thought by linking that one I could show it directly and a little more succinctly :p

Though sporadic reminders can still help, so I didnt actually have a problem with your post (and dont disagree with the point). If people arent looking back then they wont see messages reminding them to search, so by posting it, you're reminding them (and it doesnt say that you didnt search beforehand, because its somewhat irrelevant in this case, but you gotta admit, its a little funny).

Adam, perhaps when you create a new post you could have some text that says "Are you sure you searched for the topic first?" hehe.
