Seeking help with selection of a lure throwing rod for use at Quobba PLZ!

Hi all

Just after a bit of advice on rod selection. Im after something to use off the rocks at Quobba. Ive got a fair idea what I want but anyones feedback on these rods or recommendations on something different would be appreciated. Im after something about 10-13ft to throw lures with (mostly medium-large metals and lures to 100-120gms, but also stickbaits, poppers, lightly weighted mulies etc) and to handle 20-50lb braid but still be light and  have a fast enough action to cast as long as possible and work lures well. It will be paired with a okuma vs80sa and a saltiga dogfight.

I use it a fair bit so don’t want to go too overboard with custom set ups (because I live in Carnarvon and the rod will be getting worked hard- from previous experience I know theyll get banged up from frequent use on the rocks pretty quickly), but want to spend up to about $350-400 on something fairly decent. Ive had a look at a few and come up with these I like the look of so far...

-          Daiwa emblem pro 13’

-          Xzoga mastery 12’

-          Shimano tirlejo 1200

If anyone has any experience with these rods for these applications and can give some feedback, or has a suggestion of something different, id really appreciate it!

Thanks guys!

Yep, thanks brg... have been on to that (have been using a much lighter (bout 8-10kg)  and cheaper graphite rod for the past couple of years or so- some silstar that i cant remember the model of- and have got the willies a few times with bigger fish- mackies, cobia and trevs usally- that just do as they please even when tired cause the rod didnt have the strength to pull them where i want them to go even in the water... usually use the swell to wash them onto a lower ledge and climb down for them or use my pole gaff or flying rope gaff to tug them up.

cheers mate. anyone else have any ideas?

I dont think you need that

I dont think you need that long a rod for casting big metals and lures...too hard work.....with your budget I'd go for a Shimano GT special...long enough to cast those big metals out of sight and very handy on poppers etc....when you get down low enough to work them

Sure its graphite and wont handle knocks like a glass or composite rod but it will serve you well with 50-80lb braid....

Last year I used an Emblem Pro on a Penn Big game surf 6810 and a mate had a Spheros 14000 on an 8' Saltiga GT rod and easily kept up to my casts on 85gm raiders.

as for cranking fish up....thats what cliff gaffs are for...unless you have a 9 wrap snyder and alvey!!

I use Ozflex 9 ft rods at Quobba. Excellent rod but as mentioned need to be careful not to damage rod on the rocks. Excelllent for casting all types of lures. We were casting 85 gram spaniads right up to Halco Maxi. Also good for hard body lures such as Rapala Xrap and Halco Poppers. Reel I use is Shimano Stradic 8000 loaded with 50lb Braid.

saltiga gt86

Mon, 2010-05-31 21:04

G'day. I'll be shortly joining my mates who are spending the whole winter ballooning season at quobba and both use the saltiga gt86/80tn's for spinning. I was lucky enough last season to use their spare outfits and they were dynamite for spinning 105grm/85grm slices off whistles and two mile. When i got back to Perth I was lucky enough to pick up a second hand but never used dogfight and gt86 for $1300.00. The gt 86 has plenty of length and sheer brute strength in the butt section to drag in mackies running 50lb away from sharks that patrol around north and south wall. The gt 86 might be a bit more costly but you can use it for ballooning and snapper fishing. The proof is in the pudding so to speak, these guys use these outfits to spin for mackies virtually everyday for twevle weeks straight and this gear never fails to perform. So if you can afford it lash out and spend a few dollars extra and get the gear that actually works the first time. Emblem Pro 962

Tue, 2010-06-01 17:35

Mate,

Even though metals have bugger all resistance when cranked back through the water, any rod much over 10ft is gonna be pretty hard work for an extended spin session, and may limit the pressure you can put on a big pelagic. As johnray pointed out, the less time your fish is in the water the better with the ever present sharks there.

Whilst they certainly are the ducks nuts, if the GT86 or 80TN are out of your budget, I'd recommend the daiwa emblem pro 962. Suits your cast weights well, very light and rated PE 2 -4. Around $300.

How's the action been at quobba so far this season?
