Small hook to hold up heavy bait when casting

Hi all ...I remember reading somewhere about using a cut down small hook attached to the running sinker to hold up a heavy bait whilst casting...I'm hoping to achieve more casting distance.... if anyone can explain the set up be much appreciated...cheers

what you want are impact

what you want are impact clips, they attach to your sinker and then clip in the bottom hook, and when the water hits the little lever on the clip it releases the hook, you can cats a LOT further with them.

i dont have a drawing but if you live north of the river pop in and see Rob a ranger joondalup and he will show you how to make the rig, its easy when you've seen it, i use them a lot during summer when the swell and wind up,

pm me if you need any help

Thanks Russ...I didn't realise there were purpose made Impact Clips...I'm SOR  but I'll make the effort and check them out...I was using non return bait slide clips which are good but like $7.50ea at my local...so thinking this may be a cheaper alternative to getting more distance when  need it

number 4 or 5 star sinker or snapper lead

impact clip

600mm leader

running lumo bead (protect the knot)

running barrel swivel

running lumo bead

300mm leader

Oceanside (O'Connor)

Oceanside (O'Connor) definately has them if you're SOR, they've got a few in Anglers' Spot (Willetton) too.

I would have thought you'd still get more distance with the slide-bait rigs rather than the impact leads though?

As far as the expense goes the sinkers are still expensive too, they're not around the $7 mark but they're still double what you'd normally pay for a sinker, but you can DIY if you've got the tools. There was a good post on it a little while ago. Doesn't include the hook though so you'd need to do some mods.

im not sure about the sinkers but the clips are about $1 each and come in packs of 15 i think...i dont use them with really big bait, just scalies or tailor fillet or mullet fillet.

if you still want to use whole fish or fish heads probably still go with the slide baiting

EDIT: cheers ben thats is a good thead, ive done it with the wires fixed but not as a breakaway

Oops, bit of confusion

Oops, bit of confusion there. My bad.

Read the thread a bit too quickly and overlooked the 'clips' as opposed to the sinkers. Still relevant, just a bit of a tangent! Cool

Here is a youtube video for making your non-return slide clips.

recon you could do alright with making your own sinkers too. ideally making them from scratch but could also drill a hole and feed wire through..bend it in the desired way to lock it up.

Might try a few myself and post some pics.

DIY slides

Thu, 2010-05-27 10:54

Cheers Bungel I like the idea of making non-return slides, but from what i have heard its hard to get spring steel thats thick enough in perth? any ideas where to get it?

Still got plenty at the moment but i hate the idea of buying the flimsy ones we have in perth for like 5 bucks each, seen a couple of the thickest ones at bluewater (1.6mm steel?) get pulled totally out of shape on a single fish.

Ill be buying a lot of my gear from there from now on, highly recommend them!
