Selecting braid. Diameter (PE) vs Breaking Strain

I went to purchase some nice braid for the old man to respool his old skool stradic 4000. I went in thinking I would get the 20lb PE 1.2 Sunline Siglon PEx8. The gent at the shop (site sponsor) was helpful and suggested I get the PE 1.7 and gave a few good reasons for doing so. The 1.7 has a 30lb breaking strain which I feel may be to high for the rod and reel the old boy will be using it on.
So my question is, when selecting some of the newer thin but strrong braid would you purchase based on breaking strain or the width of the line?

Base it on the rod you will be using
Example if the rod is a pe 2 then buy a braid that breaks at 20lb then after you find out what breaking strain you can decide if you want to buy a thin pe 1 braid that breaks at 20lb or a normal pe 2 that breaks at 20lb thinner just means you could fit more braid on reel in my opinion a pe 2 braid that breaks around 25 to 35lb is perfect for wa waters up to 80m deep
Hope this helps
wont catch em sitting at home!

I base my purchase depending
I base my purchase depending on use .. A pe2 jigging rod can handle a shit load of drag if used right (I usually clamp the spool and apply 5 - 6kg) so thin stuff is great to allow lighter jigs .. Light casting I also go for thin braids to cast further .. Heavy casting I go for thick lines to allow for heavy impact strikes ..
At the end of the day I buy my dad heavier lines though so it can deal with the odd user error better (drags are still light, just a much bigger safety margin)
